I recently tried both Mandrake 10 and SuSE 9 on my desktop at home (after using RedHat as a server for a few years). I ran into a couple of problems.
With Mandrake 10 I could not get my Sound Card (SB Vibra16 ISA) to work under ALSA. I spent a whole day trying different things. I also had trouble with the OpenGL NVidia drivers. Finally, it was tough to get it to work with my SAMBA network.
I installed SuSE and it detected my sound card perfectly. SuSE's support also had the fix for my NVidia problem which I could not find anywhere else. Finally, it works much better with the SAMBA network.
In my opinion, SuSE is much better for its ease-of-use. Oh, and YAST is the best configuration tool I've used.
It is sad that I first read the title as sphinctronics.
It is even sadder that I immediately started of thinking of electronic devices plugged into your sphincter.
This guy is right on!
I have an Access database for 16 users on a Samba share. It ran like crap until I:
1. Split the forms/reports from the data
2. Copy the forms/reports MDB to their local computer every login.
If you skip 2, you may find that your forms/reports MDB gets very large and very slow. It is also convenient for distributing changes.
As it is, I run into 1 corrupted record every 3 months or so, which is too often for my tastes. I am currently remaking it with mySQL and PHP so I can get rid of some of these crummy Win98 machines.
My Mom used to find something interesting on eBay, print the web page at work, and fax it to my Dad at work so he could bid on it, because they were not supposed to bid on stuff while at work. She didn't realize she could just copy and paste the URL into an email.
I will only build computers for family too poor (ie in college) to afford a new one from Dell. It's just too much trouble driving the 1.5 hours to wherever they live to plug in a card that "somehow" became unseated. And once they have a job and money, I point them to the Dell website!
I am having trouble finding where in the Constitution or Bill of Rights the government is givin the task of dolling out tax dollars to fund any medical research. Could someone point me in the right direction?
Research should be privately funded. If you don't like the kind of research a company is doing, boycott that company's products. When the government gets involved, things get a lot more complicated. How will you boycott the government?

I've been trying to figure out the cause of these weird problems all day.
