I have received word that the New Yorker will make article available online today or tomorrow. The article gives a bit of background on the story, and attempts to get a deeper look into the reason's for Perelman's actions.
If anyone wants a pdf of the New Yorker article on the conflict between Yau and Perelman, send an email to nld2thx at yahoo dot com As of this morning, the NYer hadn't posted the article online, so it is either this or go buy the hard copy...uggggh
The Federation of American Scientists have had a really informative site about Echelon, for quite some while. The FAS provides an excellent service to the onliune community by making widely available much of the source information of various government entities and various publications. FAS seems to be able to present its information in an objective manner that allows the reader to interpret the information from the source (with the option of reading further analyses).
The best writers will be picked up by other sites and publications
Although this may be true, it is neither assured nor would it necessarily be benficial to the free-thinking public (ie individuals who attempt to seek out a diverse source of media information). Having a single, or relatively small group of publication(s) where the *best writers* have a seemingly continuous intercourse (open dialogue...) on a wide array of issues is both convenient and beneficial. The assumption that the *best writers* will get *picked up* is a bit egregious with respect to towards the *mediocre ones* (perhaps those whose views conflict with your own?). A mix of top notch and up-and-coming fledglings is appreciated and very difficult to assemble in one location. It is very erroneous for one to assume that these voices now expressed in the forum of salon will continue unaffected htrough a disaggregated media.
Similar to several other posts, I too have not recieved any telemarketing calls on my cell phone. This may be in part to my dilligence with regard to never putting my cell phone number down on ANY form (personal info for utilites etc.). Part of this is my paranoia about having to pay for the incoming call from some random jackass (as has been shown to the case in a couple of other posts). Indeed I have noticed a difference since I have lived without a land line (wherein I would submit my phone number without regard and receive calls for credit cards...). Also, the whole deal about charities and political groups being exempt is an entire crock of crap. It never ceases to amaze that legislation somehow allows for the funding of political or idealogical entities. Of course, if this came to pass, I would be quite interested to see if there will be any sort redefining of *charities* or political groups. It is quite conceivable that through a myriad of legalesque any member of the DMA (the telemarketers unfortunate to not have membership in the DME would find themselves oddly left outside of the loophole!) would miraculously have some sort of *not-for-profit* arm of their business model.
So long as Lowley's good character is not compromised by some prankster, I will sleep easy.
(Sorry to those whose youth literature was empty without Lowley the Worm's presence).

It seems MS forgot this bullet in the *Goals* section:
Remove our third leg from the lemmings... err customer's ass.
