    At 300 miles, the largest city that'll get hit will be Billings, MT. Population 110K.

    I'm not saying it won't be fairly devastating to lots of small towns in lower Montana, Wyoming and parts of Idaho and Utah.

    But a vast swath of that is essentially nowhere.

    Uhm. You realize you're talking almost a (not even taking into account rising consumption) 20-fold increase right?

    Currently Solar (all kinds), accounts for 0.34% of all energy consumed in the US. And that's AFTER a record-setting 41% increase in new installation.

    Even if solar stays at this sort of growth rate, you're still talking nearly 10 years before it hits the levels you're talking about (again, NOT taking into account increases in consumption).

    And, honestly, people have been trying to eak out more capacity, longevity and efficiency out of batteries for the last half century or more.

    Sure, there are some very promising technologies that are showing big gains in these three areas IN THE LAB. But getting that to a dependable, stable production level is the kind of thing that can consume dozens or hundreds of (parallel) lifetimes of work.

    I'm not saying "don't try".

    I'm simply of the opinion that there are other areas where money spent NOW will pay off far more and far more rapidly.

    Some of these can be solved with chemistry. Some can be solved with maintenance intervals and part replacement.

    That's essentially what this is.

    Sure, you get an allotment up front.

    And for someone who does nothing but e-mail, it's overkill.

    But for anyone who uses an internet connection beyond that, it's basically a way to infinitely pad the bill.

    People aren't paying them $50-100 a month for a glorified e-mail connection.

    They're paying them $50-100 a month for an unlimited connection.

    And selling someone a 100MBit connection, then telling them you're going to start charging them MORE once they exceed 250GB (which is basically less than 1% total possible throughput), and oh yeah, watching more than a couple HD movies a month will put them over? Oh, and did they mention? They'll be playing with your connection to drop some of your traffic and de-prioritize others (that just happen to belong to direct competitors) so the performance sucks.

    You ARE limiting their connection. Because damn few working-class people can afford internet bills in the multiple hundreds of dollars every month.

    Do consumers have multiple options?

    Sure:

    * Maybe cable
    * Maybe DSL
    * Dialup

    Dialup, in 2014 is simply unacceptable. You can lump satellite in here as well as they're using a dialup connection for the return loop.

    DSL isn't much better unless you're paying through the nose and out the ass for some sort of channel-bonded setup. Even then, you have a choice of ONE provider. Why? Because everyone else is simply reselling the ILEC's service.

    Cable is about the only thing approaching a decent "I don't need to think about the speed" connection. Most locales have exactly ONE option. And if their service sucks, or if they're blatantly fucking around with your traffic, toughski shitski.

    FIOS is a dead-end. As Verizon has already announced they're no longer building that network out any further. Not to mention their piss poor operation of the FIOS network.

    And no, real grass roots does NOT have money behind it. That's why it's grass roots idiot!

    About paying for open, unfettered access, and having some bean counter with an agenda decide what you can ACTUALLY see?

    And Marxism fails because it view labor as something nobody really wants to do, and ignores transportation, distribution and associated concerns as necessary evils.

    Here, the last-mile providers are acting like Marxists. They see only this big customer base of theirs as having any intrinsic worth.

    Never mind that if they don't provide unfettered access, and don't manage to stifle all competition, they won't continue to HAVE that kind of customer base.

    Net neutrality is about being able to use the internet connection you pay for, for any purpose that suits you (with nods towards the concept of "legal activity" of course) without having your traffic interfered with.

    Net neutrality is about preventing illegal censorship.

    Net neutrality is about protecting you from unscrupulous business practices by major (and minor) providers of both the transport and last-mile variety.

    So screw the Koch Brothers and their idiot shilling.

    More expensive because your little horse in the race has a ton of subsidies.
    Without them, solar's a VERY expensive beast to push.

    As for proliferation. You run more than one reactor. So you burn down any and all byproducts until you essentially have lead.

    As for less stable.

    Explain stability issues in a liquid fueled molten salt reactor.

    Explain how this is better than burning fossil fuels in the megatons every year and blowing most of the waste up a smokestack and into the environment...

    Yes, the final byproducts of a fission system tend to be nasty and short lived or long-lived and relatively harmless. But they CAN be contained.

    You know what "contains" the stuff the fossil fuel companies blow into the atmosphere?

    Nothing. MAYBE outer space. But other than that...nothing.

    So, pick your poison. Something you can lock away for a couple hundred years and be done with it, or breath it in over the course of your lifetime.

    Fortunately, in this case, it's what someone who's sick of BOTH "parties" is saying because he wants the entire group of game-players, pork farmers and pretty much ANYONE deeply entrenched in the political process stripped of their job, and have the jobs handed to people who actually want to do the damn job the way it's supposed to be done.

    We might have to go through several ENTIRE crops of candidates and basically cripple the government for a few years, but, in the end, the message is sends is this.

    "The party's over. Get back to fucking work."

    This is surgery. In some cases, with a wound, you can clean it out and it'll heal up nicely.

    But, sometimes, it's bad enough that you basically just need to excise the whole thing, till you have nothing but healthy tissue.

    That's what needs to happen here.

    They all need to go. All the game-players, and special-interest pork farmers. ALL OF THEM.

    You don't leave any behind to reinfect the wound.

    We can then drop in an entire group new guys and be EXPLICIT about why they now have their jobs and the the other guys are now holding "Will legislate 4 food" signs.

    You MIGHT have to do it a couple times. And yeah, it'd be disruptive as hell. But, eventually, the message would be gotten.
