As far as point 4 goes, all you need is a Creative Labs DXR2 decoder board, and download their open source software from the site. There you go. DVD player in Linux. Their CSS key is encoded in the hardware safe and sound.

I don't get everybody talking about how there isn't one, since there is. There is no SOFTWARE ONLY solution, but there is indeed a solution.

This might be the obvious next step were it not for the fact that the layer has to be exposed to the atmosphere in order for it to work in the first place.

Yes that is what the article said. The only problem with this is the fact that the article is WRONG. It is indeed exposure to the atmosphere that causes the degradation to begin. So now all these people worrying about pausing the player, or watching a chapter and not being able to see it again are talking about a non-issue. I posted a correction with the url to a much better article on this yesterday.

  4. Re:Won't this gum up DVD players? on Self-Destructing DVDs: Son of DIVX · · Score: 1

This has nothing to do with any coating "breaking off". What an absurd idea that would be. The coating turns blue after a predetermined period of time after exposure to the atmosphere. Then the dvd player can't read it anymore. At least until somebody figures out how to buff the coating off.

  5. Re:Vandalism on Self-Destructing DVDs: Son of DIVX · · Score: 1

It wouldn't do a thing to the disk. Now on the other hand, if someone were to poke holes in the wrapper, then the disk would turn blue and not work after the specified time. I just hope if they do bring this to market that the disk is visible so that you can see if it is "fresh" or not.

  6. Re:What about hardware tampering? on Self-Destructing DVDs: Son of DIVX · · Score: 1

The hardware has nothing to do with it. Once the disk is exposed to the atmosphere, it begins to degrade. I would imagine the easiest way to circumvent this (or even fix it afterwards) would be to simply buff the coating off.

All this talk about the dvd starting to degrade when the laser hits it is erronous. It starts to degrade when the sealed package is opened. Here is a better article on the subject. I found it a few days ago.

Also, all this talk about pirating by copying it is really annoying. The disks will most likely NOT have all the goodies that are on a full dvd, and will probably be pan and scan only to boot. Who want's a copy of that? Certainly not me. Might as well just wait and get a previously veiwed vhs copy for all that's worth to you. I will pay the $15 - $20 it costs to OWN a dvd I want with all the enhanced features intact. I'm not rich, but I'm sure not that cheap, especially considering the cost of a dvd ram drive + the cost of media.

The one thing they need to iron out is some type of recycling effort once this goes into production, where you take your stack of watched disks back whenever you want, and they give you 10 or 25 cents each and send them in to be recycled into whatever they can to keep them out of landfills.

I personally see absolutely no reason why this story should NOT be posted. Q was one of the most famous geek/gadget guys in history. It matters not whether he was a ficticious character, he was loved by many people for many years. I'm sure he was a driving force and inspiration to alot of geeks and inventors. Football is ok if thats what you like, but it is a really stupid comparison to try to make here. I for one could care less about it, of course since I am female that may have something to do with that too, but it still has no place here and certainly less to do with the subject matter at hand. I was certainly sad when the news woke me up on the radio yesterday morning, especially since my husband had bought Tommorow Never Dies the night before for us to watch. I always thought the Q scenes were one of the high points in every Bond movie. If you don't like stories like this then I invite you to learn how to use /. a bit better and make them dissapear from your sight. You have no business dictating what should and should not be on here if your view is true to your posting, because you really don't have a clue. Hell, most of the geeks I know don't even know what /. is, much less any mainstream folk. Most normal folk I know, if pointed here, would take one look, scratch there head and go "What the heck is this?", and move on.

I would like to add, re: the GUI, it is ABSOLUTELY NOT part of the os, as it can be replaced, in 95, 98 AND NT. See LiteStep. I have not seen Litestep mentioned in any of these threads, and it is a really nice GUI replacement. Look at OS/2. Never was PM or WPS claimed to be part of the os, in fact they were called what they were, and it was just as much a part of the operating environment as is the 98/NT GUI.

I say that if a part can be replaced, and the OS would be still considered to be the same one, that it is not part of the OS. That includes GUI's, editors, file managers, browsers, connectivity apps, email progs, backup utils, hard disk utils, networking utils, etc.. etc...

As far as palms and the like, they are very proprietary systems, built for proprietary hardware, though, I don't doubt if you had the means, you could create an alternative GUI for it. The best I can tell, this article was most likely written in reference to MS and Windows, in light of the DOJ case, so I think that is apples to oranges.

I would have to say that the vast majority of people that watch dvd movies, use a dvd player hooked into their home theatre systems, not sitting at their desk watching them on their computers. Everybody I know, that has a home theater setup (just about everybody I know) has at LEAST 1 dvd player, NOT counting the one that may be in their computer. Sorry, wait as long as you like, DVD is here to stay for a while. It has ALREADY become the standard. There is no downside. You pay $150 more or less, then movies cost pretty much the same amount (just a little more, but well worth it) as VHS, they don't degrade, the sound is worlds apart, as is the picture... so you can't record wrestling on monday night on it, or whatever.. just dust off the old vcr and fire it up if that's something you just gotta do. I really VERY RARELY record on my vcr, I use it to watch my video collection, (which is fast becoming a DVD collection) and that's about it. If you want to sound like a video elitest, go right ahead, but that elite hardware is for SURE not going to become a standard anytime soon. And just for curiosities sake, how many studio's are releasing movies on a better format? I thought so. Have fun.
Sounds like a bitter DIVX fan to me.
