whoops, I should know better than to react with outrage before I've had caffeine :-) apparently one of my neurons forgot to turn left at Albuquerque and I made up an alternate history. you're right, not a bad pun.

why does being a business mean you can be unethical? That single notion which is apparently accepted by many people is the source of a tremendous amount of harm in the world.

actually the "greens", or whatever they were called back then, having been recommending we find alternatives to fossil fuels for over 30 years (probably more). The problem is the powers that be don't want to listen because their power comes from their control of oil.

  8. corporate ethics on OSCON Panel: SCO Lawsuit About the Money · · Score: 4, Insightful
based on all the sarcasm so far it looks like most people buy into the idea that companies can do whatever they want to make money, they shouldn't be judged in the same way we judge people. Obviously there are limits as we wouldn't condone a company that murdered people (or would we? look at all the defense companies that sell to just about anyone) and people start to grumble about companies like ENRON and Martha Stewart and Nike and other companies using child labor, etc. Why are corporate criminals are rarely punished? Is this attitude a result of the increasing difficulty in achieving the American dream? Are there people we might consider ethical who convince themselves that it's OK to keep working for Nike or SCO or Microsoft or whomever because they're just a cog and aren't responsible for the company's actions? Obviously it's not always a black-and-white call for someone to make but I think a lot of people are in major denial. Companies don't only exist to make money. They also provide some goods or services, provide employment, conduct research that eventually benefits the public, etc. All of the focus on profit is harmful and shouldn't be accepted by people inside or outside the company.

for those of us who don't have Macs, could you let us know a bit more about what makes iTunes so flexible and powerful? I'm interested to learn what other people want in playlist management.

if you want to see a somewhat unusual mp3 player, check out http://www.zenlunatics.com/zlplay. It's not graphically exciting but allows non-hierarchical navigation. For example, songs can belong to groups for an artist, a disc and others. You can listen to all your songs in random order and then when you hear one from an artist you're in the mood for, one click switches you to listening to songs just by that artist.

  11. Isn't this un American? on MS FrontPage Restricts Free Speech II (It's True!) · · Score: 1

This license seems rather ironic from a company whose recent FUD tried to link the GPL with communism. Restricting free speach is unconstitutional and clearly shows their true colors. People should make a big deal of this.
