  1. Question on Measuring Good Vibrations · · Score: 2, Interesting

Could this technology be used in helping to determine what made violas made by Stratavarius so pleasing to the ear? I know that MRI scans have been done to determine composition of the instruments, but perhaps these types of non-destructive testing could also prove useful.

  2. Funnies in the source code on ASCII QuickTime Movie Player · · Score: 5, Funny

Read the source code to get the "Top X Tips for better ASCII QuickTime Movie Viewing". I particularly like number nine.

  3. Texas has a law on Telcos Play Both Sides of Telemarketing War · · Score: 1

The Public Utilities Commission has a "do not call" registry that telemarketers are required to use. http://www.puc.state.tx.us/

  4. Still not available on ProTools for Mac OS X Released · · Score: 4, Informative

According to the linked press release the software will not be available until later this year. It will also require DD hardware unlike the "free" version of Pro Tools for Mac OS.

  5. Clara OCR on Accurate OCR? · · Score: 1

Clara OCR, though developed for *nix, is a decent OCR program. You should try it. We've used it to OCR old inventory sheets (some handwritten) with fairly accurate results. It now has Win32 binaries available, too. Here is their homepage.

  6. WinFax Options on How to Stop Rampant Junk Fax? · · Score: 1

If you already own Microsoft's Outlook then you have a copy of WinFax Lite on your computer. You can receive faxes directly into Outlook using this product. If you don't already own that product, or you prefer something a little bit more robust then you can snag a copy of WinFax PRO 10.0 from Symantec for a MSRP of $99.95. Also, if you don't have a modem then a cheap Lucent-based controller-less "Winmodem" will set you back about $10 - $15. Drivers are available for Linux, too. I'm not sure what program you might use in Linux. I haven't really tried to mess with faxing in that operating system. All prices are in United States dollars.

  7. One man's experiences on Friendships in the IT Workplace? · · Score: 1

While I worked for a repair shop in Cleveland, Tennessee, I had several get-togethers with my co-workers. We would frequently enjoy catching movies with our families, having dinner parties, helping each other out with babysitting or moving, etc.

We were a small shop, though. At any given time there were only four employees besides the boss and his wife. Actually, there *was* a time when we had six employees, but one of them got fired and the other one left for school in Alabama.

Of course, the entire previous paragraph is irrelevant to your query, so I'll just forget that I ever typed that.

  8. ThinkPad i1400 series on Rolling Your Own Laptop? · · Score: 1

I have an IBM ThinkPad i1400 2611-411 that I've upgraded to 256 MB RAM and a bigger, better, badder HDD. It suits Linux development *almost* perfectly. The screen only displays at 800x600x16bpp. I run a custom distribution: Linux From Scratch. I'm using kernel 2.2.20-aa1 with a handful of other modifications. Everything including the Lucent "winmodem" works great. I even get about 15 hours of battery life with a special battery made by Electrofuel, Inc.. There are several reviews of that product out there, too. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are several "older" notebooks out there that can be used for this purpose. My ThinkPad has survived several one meter drops without breaking (although the case did pop open a bit once). There aren't even damaged spots on my HDD! Combine this with a handheld (Palm, Visor, Pocket PC), and you can really be mobile...

  9. Just Don't Go on Web Ads with Sound? · · Score: 1

If I find a site that uses incredibly annoying ads, tracking cookies/gifs, and other stupid marketing tricks then I simply stop going to that website. I'll find a different source for the information that I require.

Also, Lynx was mentioned a bit further up. That's a really good way to avoid multimedia advertisements.

  10. Buying a Nuclear Submarine on Defusing The Kursk · · Score: 1

I wonder if Russia would consider selling any of their fleet to civilians. If I could afford such a venture, I would really enjoy taking one for a joy ride.

  11. Good Co-lo in Arlington, TX on Non-Commercial Colocation? · · Score: 1

There is a fairly good co-location provider in Arlington, Texas (it's actually in Mannsfield, a suburb of Arlington).
