I really don't understand the Slashdot posters who say 'I cant believe there will be a 32bit version'...

I will tell you why theres a 32bit version - because theres already a huge 32bit install base that may wish to upgrade, and by and large, the vast majority of your end user base doesnt need the benefits 64bit brings to the table!

If MS went 64bit only, they would be slated for it - they would be requiring an upgrade far in excess of any that previous Windows versions have required. Thats why there is a 32bit version - because this isnt about pushing the 64bit agenda.

    http://it-experts.dk/blogs/rsj/archive/2009/01/01/booting-windows-7-from-a-vhd-file.aspx

After playing with it for a day or so, I think Libraries are interesting but I need to play with them some more before committing. The taskbar is nice, and works well - several of the 'cute' features are well thought out, such as the 'Show Desktop' functionality now being a small sliver of the taskbar on the right hand side, which if you hover over makes all windows 100% translucent, and if you click it minimises everything. Each 'window preview' on an application instance icon in the task bar does something similar if you hover on it - only keeps that apps windows opaque. Nice.

It seems very stable - the installer was the Windows 2008 one, it literally asks what language you want, where you want it installed and do you want to upgrade or fresh install. Then its away and installing - everything else is done afterward.

IE8 has issues on this website - lots of refreshing to a blank page for seemingly no reason. Not ready for the prime time - Chrome and Firefox work fine though.

One thing that struck me, and other people I have talked about, is that due to the focus on icons for the task bar now (instead of the label, as Win95 to Vista uses), some people are really going to have to polish their icons (Putty - the icon is nice when its small, but it sucks at larger sizes - at the moment Im using the Kterm icon for Putty!).

While I cant say Ive heavily stress tested it, theres been no show stoppers for me as of yet. I'm currently using it as my main desktop (aside from my OSX systems), so we shall see how we get on in the coming months.

The problem with 'maxRichResults' is is that it also kills url matching, which is how pre-AwesomeBar url bars used to work - by setting it to zero, you turn off *any* matching, which is not what I want.

I'm going to stop you right here - thankyou for the effort you have put in, but I have spent a lot of time looking for ways to get back the old URL bar functionality in Firefox, and believe me there is no way. None of the purported extensions do it, none of the about:config settings do it (even in conjunction with each other).

The problem is is that the development team changed the underlying algorythm, and trying to tweak it to perform the old functionality is impossible - what we Awesome Bar haters are looking for is a way to revertthe algorythm to the old one. So far, Firefox developers have refused, so my main browser is no longer Firefox...

Ahem, no - all aircraft have a Maximum Landing Weight (MLW), which is why you see aircraft dumping fuel in emergencies. The VC-25s do not land at anywhere near their MLW weight, so they have absolutely no more stress placed on them than any other airliner in the world.

Also, commercial airliners are operated at a much higher frequency than the VC-25s are, usually two or three times a day - commercial airliners have a lot more stress placed on their airframes than the VC-25s do.

A lot of the internal components are built in the US, including much of the avionics (Honeywell), the safety systems (escape slides etc from Goodrich), GE and Smiths Aerospace build the main landing gear, Alcan supplies metalwork, Boeing supplies the wingtip fences (via Hawker de Havilland, a Boeing subsidiary), the hydraulic power systems are American (Eaton).... the list goes on and on.

Actually the A380 can operate out of as many airfields as the 747 can - the reason it isn't planned to is because of passenger offload and FOD issues (the outer engines overhang taxiways, causing a potential foreign object debris issue, but at these airports the A380 would simply taxi on the inner engines only).

There is a real reason Congress had a shit fit with regard to the KC-X beign awarded to Airbus - the *original* tender was a very quick one thrown together in the wake of 9/11, in order to throw Boeing a bone with regard to pork barrel spending (airlines were getting a lot of money at hte same time, but none of them were buying planes with it - they needed the money to survive themselves). This tender fell apart when Boeing and the Pentagon procurement officer in charge of the tender were found guilty of unethical conduct (Darleen Druyun had told Boeing they could inflate their bid, and also gave them indepth information on the Airbus bid at the time). In reality, the KC-135 fleet doesn't need replacing, they just need extra money to refit them.
