  1. Gaps in both on Teachers Back Away From Evolution In Class · · Score: 1
    Teach all sides.

Evolution -> has gaps large enough to drive a truck through, assumes no real design in the universe, that the patterns in nature are all random happenstance, presumes the lack of any driving force, fails to explain DNA properly, pretends that "irreducable complexity" does not exist.

Creationism -> A broad term encompassing those believing in evolution guided by "intelligent design" over vast swaths of time, and the "young earth" crowd espousing a literal 6 * 24hr day creation. (I'm not even getting into a word study on the hebrew word of "yom" and how it can be literal or figurative).

Why can we not teach that we don't have the answer because we are standing at the end looking back and guessing how we got here? We dig through the scrap heat of history and try to put the pieces together. We cannot prove via the scientific process the existence or lack of a driving force, because if it exists, it has intelligence, and if that intelligence far outstrips our own, then it can thwart or avoid our tests.

Rather we could simply teach our kids rational thinking and that truth exists, and they are choosing what they choose to believe.

The separation of Church & State does NOT necessitate the separation of God & Country.

  3. Re:Oooh, bad advice. You're wrong on Losing My Software Rights? · · Score: 1
Do you have any idea what it costs to produce MS Office? The few hundred bucks you pay to own a copy of it does cover development and pad MS's pocket, so let's say it's 25% dev cost. So let's say you paid $50 from your purchase of MS Office to the developers. HOW MANY $50 does it take to pay a hundred developers 50 - 100 K a year for 3 - 5 years.

Look at the reality of the math behind software sales. Until you produce something that complex it's hard to grasp, I've been on both sides.

We can't have all software free, it takes motivated talent and dedicated time to produce this stuff and you can't produce much code if you can't afford to eat.

  4. Seriously? on Losing My Software Rights? · · Score: 5, Insightful
Ok, we all pass this cross roads as developers. You are hired for a purpose, and if your job is to produce software for that company then they own the software.

If you produce it in your free time and it isn't related to your work, then the company is unfairly trying to take your work.

If you are simply doing what they ask you to you are doing your job.

The question here is, did the University get the grant or did you? Would you have been able to get the grant if you weren't at the university because of the credentials of the institution? Were you hired as a research associate into an existing area that is managed by someone else?

If so, put your ego aside and accept that you are growing as a professional.

Now if you have the credo to be a principal researcher then find an institution that will provide you the room you want to have more ownership of your IP.

Too often we think we are the only ones who can do what we do when in reality there are many talented developers out there.

We have to accept as a profession that we are driven by business needs at some point.

  5. Talk / DD / Mount on (Useful) Stupid Unix Tricks? · · Score: 5, Informative
People seem to be losing the ability to use all the older manual ways of doing things.

On the older systems, talk was a great utility.

dd, device duplicator / disk destroyer

mount, what I can't have a desktop icon?

also managing disk volumes and the old conventions of /opt, /u, /usr, /usr/local

This new fangled Linux craze with all of the UI tools is feeding it. Redhat is training admins that are dependent on a given release of their enterprise software (which I am a huge fan of) but not teaching them how it works under the hood.

    How about slirp? scp?

The one ray of hope seems to be a new generation hacking their bsd and linux based (iPhone/Android) phones and having fun in a somewhat embedded (but full blown) *nix environment.

  6. Pretend they are Executives (CEO/COO/CFO) on How Do I Talk To 4th Graders About IT? · · Score: 1
    Seriously!

The Execs don't care about details, they want the highlights, the parts that make people happy.

You manage computers that make what every person in that company does FASTER! They can talk to each other with email, they can schedule a meeting without having 4 meetings to schedule it.

You MAKE THE INTERNET WORK! When they see a webpage, it came from your servers and across your network!

All they know about a computer is what they see on a screen, and they have no real concept of the value of money, so free software doesn't ring a bell.

Just like I said, pretend they are execs :)
