  1. When blimps crash on New Aircraft is Part Blimp and Part Airplane · · Score: 1

I live not too far away from where the Goodyear blimp crashed in South Florida. Using a media pass I actually got to see the wreckage up close. It fell right on top of a public storage facility. The amusing thing (everyone survived) was hearing newscasters say that to dismantle the crashed blimp they were going to send in workers with box cutters. Box cutters.

  2. Re:Has Any Superman Movie Not Sucked? on Superman V: The Sordid Story · · Score: 3, Informative
Anyone worth Superman's effort to be fighting should be busy running for Congress anyway. Everyone knows that's where you go if you want to be able to do some real damage...

Ironically, the book Gladiator on which Superman was most likely based (written in 1930 by Philip Wylie) featured a "superman" archetype going to congress and trying to strongarm them into disarming. Kind of a naive, idealistic view for 1930...

I don't recall two and three even showing up in theaters.

Superman II grossed over 100 million. It was a hit by all accounts and is considered by many to be one of the best superhero movies of all time. The franchise jumped the shark with Superman III which co-starred *Richard Pryor*.

  4. I'm leaning towards the Ruskies on this one... on Climatologists Wager on Global Warming · · Score: 3, Interesting

I thought I'd never say that. It's interesting how mainstream media has declared that a majority of scientists say global warming is real and directly tied into carbon emissions. When the only consensus is that things are getting warmer (opposite of when the planet was getting cooler in the 50's through 60's and causing the global cooling panic).

I have no trouble accepting that carbon emissions could cause warming, however the evidence isn't there yet. I have several friends in climatology, geology and astronomy who shake their heads everytime a new panic prediction is released. They're not right-wing anti-environmentalist idealogues. They're scientists who see multiple cause for global warming, man being only one of them.

The "better something than nothing" crowd loses traction with me when it comes to Kyoto. It's just a bad plan.

  5. This explains... on Orkut Linked To Drug Ring Bust · · Score: 2, Funny

I guess this explains how Google beat forecaster's predictions on profitability.

Gates won't take this sitting down. Maybe we need to take another look at that recently discovered drug tunnel on the Canadian border. I wonder if it was meant to go all the way to Redmond?

  6. Kind of hollow... on Doctorow and Stross Release Latest Novels for Free · · Score: 1, Interesting

I believe DRM is futile. However, it's real easy to release a 320 page book online as a protest about DRM when *nobody* wants to read a digital version or spend $80 to print it. Doctorow has little to risk by doing this.

When we have a large install base of portable ebook readers that are as easy to use as books (and as prolific as iPods) I'd be curious to see if Mr. Doctorow keeps giving digital ones away for free.

  7. Dual user... on Back and Forth Between Qwerty and Dvorak? · · Score: 0

  8. A modest proposal... on BBC Comedy Show to Debut Online · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Let me charge a *mandatory* fee on every television in the US to fund my network and I'll promise to make all sorts of programming *free* for download. I'm that nice.

I grew up watching BBC programs. I love the BBC. But, that has more to do with brit humor and sensibility than anything else. The BBC is a government funded entity that's supported by taxes. Comparing it with private networks that don't have the luxury of making subscribership mandatory is silly.

Step 1. Tax everyone who owns a TV set
    Step 2. Profit!!!!
Step 3. Create some good and some mediocre programming and *give* it away because it's already paid for

  9. Who cares? on Borders to Use CCTV Face Recognition · · Score: 1

Is anybody aware that for the last 30 years?:

    - The Post Office displays the photos of wanted fugitives and missing children
    - Supermarkets have photos of bad check writers
    - Casinos keep track of cheaters via surveillance cameras and databases

Who cares? None of these things violate your rights. Neither do the public cameras in Tampa. The keyword is "public". When you go out into public anybody can take your picture, videotape, etc. That's the difference between public and private property. When it's your property you can say no. If it's Border's property they can say yes.

Why is it so important that instead of some guy making $6.25 an hour sitting behind the TV at the other end of the camera there's going to be a computer? Our rights remain the same. If a public or private institution screws up, they have the same liabilities as before the technology.

The paraphrased quotes from our founding fathers regarding sacrificing our rights are being poorly used. Franklin, Jefferson, et al had a clear understanding of the difference between public and private property. Some of the so-called libertarians on this list are starting to sound like socialists in their invention of new "rights." Instead of the right to "free healthcare" their claiming the right to go into a public place and not be watched. I missed that part when I read Locke, Rand, and Jefferson.
