i've been lugging my 5 year old powebook to work and home every day and all around the country, and it's taken quite a beating pretty well. that, and it is very stable. for example, currently:
regarding his statement Radio stations are worth what they cost, nothing. Obviously he has not spent much time going through them. KEXP, for example, is an excellent and very popular alt/rock station out of Seattle. I know many people who have discovered it through the iTunes preset. There are several other gems in there too, but that is the only one I listen to daily.
Maxtor makes 80 GB external firewire drives for $300 that can easily be taken off site (avoiding the "fire" problem).
I use a smaller firewire drive to back up files and I find its speed to outperform all other forms, especialy backing up over a network to a linux file server, which was my original plan.
I guess a solution like this would be perfect for casinos. Anyone know what they do?

On a very related note, news.com just posted a good article filled with people's compaints about Microsoft's new licensing strategy, and how it is really just a way to subtly raise prices. Star Office and Linux are mentioned, but the conclusion is that no one considers them real alternatives:

The problem seems like an economic one called the common pasture problem: (see http://dieoff.com/page95.htm ) In the same way that a group of farmers will all overgraze a common pasture, a few people will abuse a free network, and people in areas of high density (say, living next door to a coffee house for example) will have their personal connections saturated.
