i've been lugging my 5 year old powebook to work and home every day and all around the country, and it's taken quite a beating pretty well. that, and it is very stable. for example, currently:

regarding his statement Radio stations are worth what they cost, nothing. Obviously he has not spent much time going through them. KEXP, for example, is an excellent and very popular alt/rock station out of Seattle. I know many people who have discovered it through the iTunes preset. There are several other gems in there too, but that is the only one I listen to daily.

    Or IDE Hard Drive +firewire

Maxtor makes 80 GB external firewire drives for $300 that can easily be taken off site (avoiding the "fire" problem).

I use a smaller firewire drive to back up files and I find its speed to outperform all other forms, especialy backing up over a network to a linux file server, which was my original plan.

  7. Common Pasture Problem on Wireless Freenets As The Parasitic Grid · · Score: 2, Informative
    Wonderful idea.

The problem seems like an economic one called the common pasture problem:
(see http://dieoff.com/page95.htm ) In the same way that a group of farmers will all overgraze a common pasture, a few people will abuse a free network, and people in areas of high density (say, living next door to a coffee house for example) will have their personal connections saturated.

Check out the link above or do a google search for common pasture and economics.
