The 1Gb model will still cost £200 compared to Apple's iPod Shuffle at £99. The new models will feature a OLED display though.
From BBC:
The new players have up to one gigabyte of storage and depending on which version, cost between $150 and $180.
So what's the price? The first quote makes it sound like it's about twice the cost of the
Shuffle's $150, then about $300. The sceonds says
that it should be around $150.
What's the price??
This comes from a proud owner of a 1Gb Shuffle.:-)
> even though it is a rip off of another game...so much so they got sued...
Just a quick fact check,
I believe that they were not sued over Hit'N'Run, but "Simpsons's Road Rage".
I'm sure if Hit'N'Run was also sued, someone will point out my mistake, but
Road Rage was definitely sued.
This sounds very similar to the Pebbles Project from CMU. I know because I was one of the chief designers while at school. Granted, I haven't worked on it for awhile.
The PebblesPC part of the package basically sets
up a conduit between a PDA application and PC application. Because the projects goals are more research-oriented, there aren't many commercial applications (that I know of right now). But there definitely was some noise made about SlideShowCommander.
SlideShowCommander allows the user to control and communicaate with PowerPoint from the PDA, which is useful while giving a presentation. It was pretty neat. You could navigate through the slides, draw on them, etc. It was picked up by Synergy Solutions and is sold through them. Google provides the link here, but it appears to be down.
In any case, the Pebbles project is a free download. Or, you can buy the SlideShowCommander from Synergy, and give *me* some (small) amount of money. <<BIG GRINS>>
If you're building something out of it anyway, PartsExpress has good deals on 'LCD Modules' which basically are the screens without the finished edges.
There's a special right now for a 5.6" screen for $100! (part no 205-017).
I bought a small screen there for $90 a few months ago to put in my car. They come highly recommended.
Wait, so does this mean that SSL through Internet Explorer has been insecure since Windows 98 days? This is absolutely obscene.
I don't have the link on hand, but I think I saw someone posting on here the link to a security firm saying they found this bug 2 years ago.
Since SSL is something that e-commerce is based on and most people use IE, this means that it's be open to man-in-the-middle attacks since Windows98?
Who's to say if it's actually been exploited yet?
This is totally unacceptable. I almost *WISH* that it will-get/has-been exploited and harm some large company so they can bring their full weight onto Microsoft for knowing about this flaw for 2+ years and not fixing it.
The last article seemed a bit weak on details with respect to Mozilla, trying 0.9.4 or something. But anyway, I'm assuming Mozilla doesn't use this CryptoAPI (CAPI). Can someone hopefully more knowledgeable than I give some details? Is Mozilla open to this hole, or to a similar one of its own?
Of course, since it's open-sourced, I guess I can check the source. But does someone know off the top of their head?
For those few who are calling me a racist or a bigot because of my choice of using 'Islam' and 'Allah':
I have no racial issues. I (unlike you) know that there's a difference between races and religions. However, as I said, you may substitue any other sensible pair, like 'Hindu' and 'Vishnu'. You are the ones who are acting unAmerican. My religious convictions (or lack thereof) are only taking the the veil of religion (that is covering your eyes) away.
... I ask you to consider a simple scenario. What if this gets repealed, then in 30-40 years, the major religion in the country changes to something else, like Islam. What if there would then be a successful lobby to change 'under God' and 'In God We Trust' to 'under Allah' and 'In Allah We Trust'. How would you react to that?
(Feel free to substitute 'Islam' and 'Allah' with any appropriate pairing).
I, for one, am completely for this ruling, speaking as a person who always felt uncomfortable mumbling those 2 words in grade school.
My recommendation is the JVC KD-SH99. I bought this head unit last November and it's been great to me.
The JVC site is pretty weak on a description, but I found mine from Yahoo! Shopping by searching for "SH99" for about $300 then. I'm sure it's cheaper now.
The SH99 plays MP3 CDs and I've had NO problems with and CDRs. It has a RCA inputs on the back for hooking up something more significant (DVD-player, Playstation2). But by far, the best feature that this head unit has is a minijack external input on the front of the head unit. This makes it easy to plug in any other equipment (walkman, MD player, IPod, Rio, etc..).
The only thing this unit is lacking is a good way to browse through a CDR full of MP3s. But there isn't one head unit that I've seen (that doesn't have a huge LCD screen) that is any better.
It does read CD-Text and ID3 tags, but if you don't have the ID3 tags on the file it has the mangled Windows filenames (PINKF~23.MP3).
I've recommended this unit to 4 of my friends, all of whom bought it, and all are extremely happy, as i am.
Here's a little tidbit for those of you with the same kinds of gripes about Sheryl Crow.
http://darwin.codefab.com/pipermail/random/2002-Fe bruary/001372.html
That link provides a list of TiVo Backdoor Codes.
To remove the clips from a TiVo 2.5 unit, first enable Backdoors by entering "B D 2 5" (one space between each character) into the 'Search By Title' and pressing ThumbsUp.
After enabling Backdoors, enter the following code from the ToDo List:
- Thumbs Down, Thumbs Down, Thumbs Up, Instant Replay
This will put all those little clips from TeleWorld into the ToDo List and will allow you to delete them. Granted, this doesn't free up any space for you, but it at least deletes the entries for BestBuy and Sheryl Crow from the Showcases. Maybe even from the main menu (I don't know because mine is already gone).
Just a bit of info for those fellow TiVo users.
I think that you're jumping the gun a bit.
I'm guessing that more than likely this was an oversight that will be corrected with the next software upgrade or "Enhanced TiVo Content" show.
This is because now TiVo has a deal with the Discovery Channel to broadcast the Video Guide data while they would otherwise be broadcasting infomercials. I'm not sure what it would do if you wanted to record something at that time, but supposedly this is in the newer TiVo software and will help to eliminate the phone from the whole mess.
BTW.. this information is mostly from articles i read linked from slashdot, as opposed to just reading the blurb and posts and knee-jerking into a post.
Actually... the funny thing is that mine doesn't have a power switch.:-P
And seriously, is it that bad?
Reading the links tells you that it doesn't (or shouldn't) interfere with anything that you are watching or recording. One of the features i like the most about my TiVo is that it's always trying to record something even if i haven't set that time aside for something else. I can't see how it's a bad thing that TiVo gets more money to record something when the unit would otherwise be doing nothing else.
I mean come on slashdot drones, TiVo needs to make SOME amount of money to keep themselves alive.
Following the link posted in the article about TiVo users being upset has a list of 'known facts' about TiVo Enhanced Content.
> If you have another programme scheduled at the time the promo airs, then TiVo will record your scheduled programme and will not record the promo. Your own scheduled recordings always take priority.
> If you are watching Live TV at the time TiVo will ask permission to change channels to record the Promo. Note if you are not around to say no TiVo will go ahead. I *think* the buffer up to the time of the channel change will still be available.
As a TiVo user, this really doesn't bother me. It is a possible alternate source of revenue for TiVo, which is always good. I've noticed them before (as other US TiVO users) and I've watched a few.
As long as it's available as an option only on the front menu, doesn't take up my recording space (they use some 'reserved space'), it doesn't force me to watch it, and it doesn't otherwise restrain my usual TiVo use, I really don't think it's a problem at all.
The TiVo is a tool that changes your TV watching habits in such a way that you may not be exposed to new shows as a normal commercial-watching viewer. While it (on principle) bothers me that it ignores parental controls, especially for a show with bad language, this is a tolerable way of letting you know about new shows.

Or much cheaper. It's been around $20 at staples for a while.

And for reference, I bought it because:
It just looks like a big pile of frog parts, all mashed together!

Keep looking the category 'Mobile Video'. You'll find many 4,5,6 inch screens.
