MY GOD THEY WROTE FDISK IN PERL! Is there no limit? What falls next, how about a port of gcc? or emacs. We are all going to be running emacs written in perl/gtk with a lisp interpruter inside. Why do not just release perlix with the perl kernel. Or we could rewrite X11 in perl.
So remember kids, next time you are offered some perl: JUST SAY NO.
A pair of goggles and a pair of VR touch sensitive gloves. You could program it so that a screen appeared floating infront of you (in case you miss your terminal). For input don't use any of this pens or tiny keyboards rubbish, have a VR keyboard floating infront of that you can use but with your hands at your sides, the computer projects a pair of imaginary hands out in front of you! Make it run hurd (linux is dead). Don't build in a mobile phone, bandwidth is too low and the range to limited, include a satellite phone interface for surfing the net. Don't just play MP3s play music videos and watch films. If you have a high bandwidth Internet connection you do not need lots of storage, stream it from another machine on the internet. The only immediate problem I can see is power, but with no hard drive that should save some.
CDE is cool, Gnome sucks

CDE vs Gnome

I think CDE looks pretty cool myself. I suppose that it is based on motif which is a shame, because gtk is easier to code/understand. Although motif does Xresources and gtk does not so motif is better in that respect. Why do they have to make all the GUI stuff (motif, CDE) non-free, don't they know that is what is going to kill Unix? I wonder if we could convice them to relicence CDE under the GPL or a BSD style licence. Or maybe we ought to go the lesstif route. Gnome is slow, it uses to much memory, and it does nothing. X was not designed to have stuff stuck to the edges like the KDE and Gnome panels, thinks were meant to float like the CDE dasboard thing. It is the right way. A GUI could have been designed to be so much more not just a copy of windows. It needed to be more like Emacs. Maybe I will write my own Graphical Enviroment how I think it should be down.
What format are we meant to send the data in? My Brother has over 600 CDs and I would be willing to catologue them but how is each identified? The site seems a bit lacking to me.
Release it now under GPL and we can fix the bits that are broken. We can replace the bits that are hard-coded. Am I right in thinking it is tied strongly to mysql, a non-free database, or could it be used with another database? A free one?
Interesting, like a changelog.html or something, and there could be a todo.html as well. Or a new section could be formed called `Small change to slashdot' instead of putting them in the `Slashdot' section, and then people who were not interested could hide that section. Maybe some people are not interested in the changes to slashdot, but myself I am facinated. My main suggestion for a change would to be to port it from mysql to a free database like nosql or postgresql. Even better would be to convince the mysql author to change the licence to GPL, but that is not going to happen. The bloke who runs linux-counter is thinking of moving to mysql. Oh, how I dislike non-free software.
I am not a citizen of the United States.
What is a H-1B worker?
We have a protocol. Why can't we stick with it?
