I've been surprised at the number of "former" IT personnel I meet in related fields, like asset management, technical management, procurement, maintenance support, etc. being technical experts or consultants. I don't want to program any more, but enjoy being the guy who still keeps a deck of Hollerith cards and can write scripts in vi when the GUI kids give up.
And 40 ain't old. Remember it fondly.
I've found on older machines that Joan Riff's PDIAGS is one of the most helpful tools for troubleshooting old *hardware* at the lower levels after booting. It lets you toggle video lines, parallel printer lines, play with bit switches on serial ports, etc. Very good tool.

If I have an immediate need for software, I'm not going to wait a few hours. I'll have found your competitor's software by that time. If it's not available now, it's not available. Get real!
True, but too many project assignements are created not to maximize the learning experience of the student, but minimize the grading efforts of the instructor.
We have the same problem, and once upon a time, were able to get some money from the supported businesses to hire some of the local college kids to work directly supervised by our IS folks to wipe the disks and test the boxes for donation to approved recipients-- usually elementary schools--for a spell. Worked until the different business divisions got into a blood bath over whose pet charity needed the most machines. (I had one scout master insist that he needed a server and a dozen workstations with software to get networking merit badges for his troop!
We now use the recovery service of one of the larger PC manufacturers to dispose of upgraded hardware. We usually get little or no credit, but it minimizes our environmental disposal certification problems (no, they can't be dumpstered if your business uses hazardous materials).
If yours is truly a large organization with a lot of assets in a lot of locations.

For us myopics, an app that used the autofocus feature of the camera to adjust text size on presets by me such that I can read the fine print.
Reminiscent of that classic Sci-Fi book _The Adolescence of P-1_

Toshiba is also the company that gave US military secrets to the USSR and I will *never* patronize Toshiba for that reason.
