As far as I know one of the intents when designing C was to make a language that doesn't forbid you doing anything, eg no internal checking and bla-bla-bla, thus not sacrificing performance

I have an Intel 486/33 without any kind of fan or heatsink. And I've never had any troubles with it (the record is 54 days uptime without a UPS). Also my younger brother used to play Fifa'99 6 hours on a Celeron/400 with a dead fan without locking up even once
Surely it's a problem with your cables because on my home lan using an old 486/33 8MB/ 120 HDD and FreeBSD-3-STABLE with one NE2000 and one digital DE205 card I don't have any problems with speeds up to 350 KBytes/s. I'd have put FreeBSD-4-STABLE but unfortunately it seems that DE205 won't be supported any longer.
I think that the real meaning of this could be represented by one picture - the tiny statue of libery in the foreground and the huge clouds scorching the sky in the foreground.
Get the symbolism - how little is everything civilized in the face of horror and destruction
