  1. Re:I expected more driver support on Windows Server 2008 One Year On — Hit Or Miss? · · Score: 1

Now if only we could get a true match for Windows Active Directory. So that the software on Windows Desktop machines, works EXACTLY as if the environment was powered by Windows servers, Exchange for e-mail, etc.

Have a look here: http://www.novell.com/products/openenterpriseserver/domain_services.html I have installed this product in a dev environment and for all intent and purposes it is Active Directory running on SLES 10. Connected XP clients to the domain and everything I can see is identical including administration using MMC. Pretty cool software.

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr r. You wait until Xen works with the hardware it needs to make virtualising Windows possible, or in the meantime, you grab a copy of VMware and install Windows or Linux on it? You could even partner with VMware. Fancy that. *Puts phone down*
I think you have missed the point completely in regard to the whole Novell/Microsoft deal. I think Novell are being very clever in their strategy and this deal was the last stumbling block in their virtulization plans.

    Let me explain:

Novell has announced their new product - Novell System Management (http://www.novell.com/products/zenworks/systemsma nagement/) which includes components such as Zenworks Orchestrator, Zenworks Virtual Machine Management and others. They are giving their customers the opportunity to align their architecture and provide a complete managed virtulization environment that will support multiple operating systems with no litigation worries. All on SLES10. This can only make their customers happy and make the shareholders money.

Why does everyone assuming Microsoft is getting all the benefit from this deal?

(EG. Novell shops could turn servers into such things as SQL database servers as well as just file/print servers, without resorting to purchasing additional boxes to do it.)

I currently work at an education institute running a Netware network. We have a Citrix Farm running 2003 server, but thats it. On our NetWare boxes we run such services as file, iPrint, Zenworks for Dekstops, Centura SQL server, GroupWise, GW WebAccess, Cluster Services, workstation policies, Extend Director Portal, ichain proxy servers plus others. All with five 9's up time, serving 10,00 users, spread over 7 campuses over 150km with tiny frame relay links. All from my desk ;-)

Whats not to like about that? Why do I need Linux?

I am currently working for an education Institute. We have been investigating the possibility of embedding a computer into a desk and using the desk in conjunction with a multi purpose classroom. We have in fact built a prototype, and it works quite well. All that is visible is the TFT screen, a keyboard and mouse. I think the NEC computer is a much easier and cheaper alternative and we will certainly look into them. Do any other of you guys have similar requirements?
