These rich and powerful people are doing whatever they can to ensure they stay rich and powerful as long as possible. They're professional politicians, not humanitarian altruists.
If you have facts to back up your little conspiracy theories (post links please), please do. Otherwise, it's just another rant from someone making stuff up.
Hey, it's not like you're the only one. I'm surrounded by leftists of the extreme, and have to listen to their ranting BS every day. It's almost comical the conspiracy theories they come up with. The sad thing is, they are some of the meanest people I ever met...something they accuse the right of being.
Anyway, either way, such overt crapola (left OR right) has no place in the workplace. Vote the way you want to vote. Spewing (usually) completely uninformed opinions (and the ones that are uninformed are usually the last to realize that), just pisses other people off.
BTW, check out this link for benchmark results. The only place the latest Java (1.4.2) did significantly worse than GCC, and skewed the results were in the trig functions. In fact, in the int math test Java beat GCC.
Slow? I don't think so.
The applications I've written for real-time audio decoding work great; I've done some non-trivial 2D graphics work and that runs great too. I've done work on large scale Java projects, and speed has never been an issue.
Sure, you can come up with some BS "it can't do this fast", but in most cases, it does just fine.
Comparing Java to Logo...well, that's just braindead. I was going to say that you haven't been keeping up with Java, but it's giving too much credit... it doesn't sound like you're aware of what Java is doing at all.
When the morning shift would come in, they were all bald, had thick glasses, and a couple were missing some teeth.
Yeah, I've seen the women at that office too.
They were handing these out at one of the CONs I went to last year.
I have to say, to a person, we couldn't figure out WHY anyone would want to pay money to play this game, when the first thing you'd do it to try and destroy 'em.
I'm actually surprised they're still out there trying to pedal these things to the market.
NSF does a lot of funding for supercomputing, although the majority of that money is used by the two main funded supercomputer centers for hardware.
Very little "research" in CS and supercomputing in particular at these sites, unfortunately. They're mainly used as places that other researchers (atmospheric sciences, astronomy, etc) use for CPU cycles.
Bush has nothing to do with it, you hate-mongering moron.
Being able to question public educators is the thing that pisses 'em off the most, since they think they can dish it out, and not have any reprecussions because of it.
How the hell long have you been in (or out) of school? Clueless computer teachers have been around for a LOOOONG time, and this has nothing to do with the current president.
"Offerings such as combination accounts, power leveling, and character transfers could potentially increase revenue for MMGs by as much as 25% of subscription fees, or $100m annually."
I think they may be over reaching here, since the fees for character transfers have only been $1 million since the game started.
I also have to disagree with the "power leveling" part... if a game offers "power leveling" for a fee, that game is sure to not have a long term appeal, since it'll be dominated with folks that just spend more money being the more powerful people in the game.
Besides, usually "power leveling" (at least in EQ) doesn't do the character that much good long term. You end up with a player that doesn't know various tactics and/or spells work in the game, and hasn't maxed out capabilities that progress as you use them throughout the lifetime of the character. Example: Defense. As you progress, your defense rating gets higher and higher. This only happens ever so often during battle. Defense ends up adding into your overall armor class. Powerleveled characters usually end up having very low defense scores. Same goes with weapons, spell casting capabilities, and the like.
The company that used to distribute Videoscape was called Aegis.
Yeah, releasing the code for Lightwave and Modeler probably won't happen soon. =)
What, like you don't get SPAM now?
information on how it's already being done.
This is exactly why John Kerry scares the hell out of most people who bother to look into what he's been up to. He's been taking money, in exchange for nominations for a long, long time now.
More mindless blag from an uninformed AC.

The number of electoral college votes are used in the US, not the overall vote count.

Slow for what?

Heh....good points, and "foreach" is even older than that.... Wasn't it in csh?
That's only true for trivial applications.
I've been involved with many large scale Java projects, and I can say your statement is pure FUD.
I hate MS has much as the next guy, but this Eolas patent is just wrong, especially in light of prior art, which has been discussed here to death on /.
Lets just hope more stupid patents like this get overturned.
Yup, van Hoff was responsible for the AWT.
Basically, Marimba did/(does?) on the fly updates of software. It's more complicated than that, but that's basically what it did.
I know at least one product their software was used in: Quicken. Probably a lot more, but I didn't pay that close attention to 'em.

By your "logic" you'd send yourself to Mars.

Assembly? WE had ones and zeros... and sometimes we didn't get the zeros! We had to use the letter "O" instead!
Kids these days....bah!
Thanks Bush? wtf?

McDonald's sells a lot of hamburgers too, but that doesn't make them the best.

Insightful? I don't think so.
The 28 countries that this poster refers to as "exempt" aren't "exempt". They're scheduled to be doing the same thing later this year.
They probably didn't make any changes to Linux itself. They aren't required to post the source.
