You might also note that the article just says "RedHat" - never says if this is a server edition, enterprise edition, older RH install or a Fedora Core installation. I would be more interested in hearing if a version of one of the linux distros set up for server had the issue vs the desktop version. Seems everyone forgets that Linux isn't just for servers.
If I remember the materials science demo from college correctly, a corn starch solution has the property of acting as a solid when a voltage is applied. A small piston on the side of the brace, filled with such a solution would do exactly as you are talking about.
If I am wrong about it being actual corn starch that does it, I can at least confirm that such a solution does exist. The were looking into the posibility of using it for vehicle shocks (adjusting the stiffness of the shock based on the terrain to be traversed).
I use a handspring visor. I found Avantgo, and it was amazing. Work wouldn't let me use internet, so I would sync and download email and Slashdot;)
I found that Handspring was giving away the SprintPCS cell phone springboard module, and ordered it just for the cost of shipping. Now I have AIM (only IM I could find for PalmOS), email, and web browsing in real time. I love it. And it's my cell phone to boot, so my address book from Outlook is direct linked (had to use MS Outlook for work connectivity, and just kinda kept it for the palm). It's really nice.
