While this seems to work well in theory, one should note how simple the desktops in the screenshots are. Three of them have an image, emacs, and a shell. The ION model works well for 3 windows but I have 11 windows (emacs, galeon, evolution, XMMS, abiword, gaim, 2 shells, realplayer, 2 xchat, nautilus) open right now on 4 VDesktops.
Tabs work great unless you want to see two things at once.

The criminal penalties only apply if the person who modified the devices did so for personal financial gain. Unless you are selling your OSS, developing FREE software isn't subject to criminal penalites.
Why doesn't "Big Blue" GPL some of the AIX code and incorporate it into Linux if they are so behind it? That would prove their dedication and help make Linux the platform IBM says they want it to be.
Still, I think this is a good thing, as the MPAA basically has no choice about whether the stuff goes online or not.
Good call. The movie industry is learing from the music industry's mp3 mistakes. In business if you don't figure out how to put yourself out of business, someone else will. I think this is a good idea. It's like renting a DVD from Kozmo.com except Kozmo doesn't exist anymore. The reason this is better than DIVX is that you don't have to buy a physical disk. Also, you are not dependant on a decryption stream from the company. Hopefully the're smart enough to release a Linux player so that only crackers will be trying to break the encryption and not self rightous linux dweebs like me.
If you have something that you want to post but maintain the copyright to, I sugest you post your article (and copyright notice) on the web and then make a usenet post with a URL.
Acording to Dr. William Dobelle (creator of the first artificial vision - like Geordi LaForge) there are three steps to the aceptance of any significant scientific advance.
What the politician knows. What is important is whether they have any aids who do. Most bills are not written by the sponsoring rep -- they are written by the rep's legislative aids. The question is what politicians have tech savy LAs.

You cannot copyright a database. Their copyright will not hold up if challenged in court. Copyright is only valid for "creative works of original authorship." No logic ordering of items can be copyrighted. Databases, recipies and phonebooks are all uncopyrightable.
If you don't believe me see FEIST PUBLICATIONS, INC. v. RURAL TELEPHONE SERVICE CO., INC. Those few Apple users that are left will probably not switch to MS just because they make their GUI look more like Apples
No but those incomming college freshmen next year who need to buy a computer for the first time and don't know anything about computers might chose XP over OSX when they used to chose iMac over Dell w/ Win98. A major demographic for the iBook and iMac is first time computer buyers. The Macs are simpler and "cooler looking." This is what XP is competing for -- not hardcore mac users. Hardcore Apple users use G4s anyway.
Microsoft's old market strategy was to (arguably) improve their products so every three years or so you would have to upgrade to get the latest features, etc. Now they don't feel like reving old software anymore so they are just going to force you to buy a new copy of their software every three years or so.
I am. Most people are. The problem comes when people deny that they are biased or allow their biases to prevent them from presenting a fair representaion of an issue.
Yes conservatives read slashdot and yes, PBS does have a liberal bias. Although, it is not so bad. In answer to your tax question, why do you think Democrats fund CPB (Corperation for public Broadcasting) and Republicans want to cut it. Personaly I like PBS and although CPB programing does have a slight libral bias I think it's tollerable. Bias in media is not restricted to CPB programming. I think the Rosie O'Donnel show was more libraly biased than anything on PBS ever. NPR is very biased and it bothers me but public television is A OK in my book.
It is amazing how well a letter or an email works for getting a message to your representatives. If congress is going to make TV go digital they need to support public television (a government program) in keeping up with the new regulations.
They are all doing budgeting right now so this is the best time to ask for money from them.
they've want something more lethal than those and less lethal than an M16
Time I checked "lethal" means it kills people. How can something be more lethal than something that doesn't kill people and yet less lethal than something that does? Does it only kill some people? Can it be used indescriminantly because it usualy doesn't kill people?
The problem with non-lethal weapons is that when the State has the ability to exert its will on its people -- without the consequences of lethal force -- it is more likely to do so.
Metrowerks moved from Toronto to Austin, TX because the nicer weather and lack of state income tax made it a more appealing location for potential hires.

seems like it's been ten years for a while. Sounds a lot like quantum computing in that respect.
time_to_implementation == localtime + 10 years

You might want to reconsider that statement. That is unless this is a story about how there are no longer any laws of thermodynamics.

Don't forget that USA can also stand for United Sceenic Artists. They are a union of theatrical designers (sets, lighting plots, etc.).

While there is definatly opertunity for abuse, this is something I've been wanting for a long time. Good places to use:

-Starbucks (probably wont happen but I can dream right?)
You can watch DVDs on Livid while running an Aqua Enlightenment theme although you will probably get sued six ways from Sunday.
