  1. Re:Virtual Credit Card Numbers on Dealing with Internet Credit Card Fraud? · · Score: 1

Sure, it's not something I do all of the time. When I do, it only takes about 30 seconds to generate one. Mostly I use it on sites that I've not delt with before or have a not so positive history. Of course, i'll try to go somewhere else first; but that is not always possible.

Sure, they do need to make their products more secure and limit our liability, but until that happens I find this a good work around.

  2. Virtual Credit Card Numbers on Dealing with Internet Credit Card Fraud? · · Score: 3, Informative

Several Credit Card companies, including CitiCard, will allow you to generate a one time use only virtual credit card number. CitiCard's is especially nice, because you can set a limit to how much can be charged to that number.

In the case of unauthorized use of your card, you should report the fraud to one of the major credit bureaus:

    TransUnion: 800-888-4213
    Equifax: 800-525-6285
    Experian: 800-397-3742

While you're at it check out http://www.ftc.gov/ for more information about your rights in resolving credit card problems.

I would take a serious look at HIPPA requirements before implementing something not specifically designed for health care related systems. The requirements for HIPPA (Healthcare Information Privacy and Portability Act, I think) are pretty strict about the format of data. That being said, I'd head over to The Open Source Health Care Alliance. I'm not sure they are still active.

I think this number is a bit high. I'm not sure they've taken into account that solar systems too close to the center of the galaxy due to the "galactic doughnut" effect. Anything to close to the center of the galaxy, in the doughnut hole, would not be habitable due to excess bombardment of gamma-rays.

I also work in a large Data center. Earlier this year we had a similar problem. We already used Active Directory for LDAP. We bought MS Services for Unix, which includes a NIS server. It works really well, actually. NDS was a great solution, but was a bit cost prohibitive. We had also looked at PAM but not all the OSs supported them.

I haven't kept up with the current design iterations of ITER, but I think the thing to remember is we are talking about Q_effective and not Q_actual. The main confusion is when we talk about Q in science and in engineering, they both use a different definition. The scientific definition is only counting the power to the plasma and not the energy for the lasers, fuel injectors, and everything else.

A common misconception about fusion reactor is that there are no negative byproducts of its use. this is simply not true. The tokamak fusion reactor would have extremely dangerous core due to neutron and proton radiation. You would have to have one heck of a system of shielding for this to be useful. Any thoughts on what would work best in the fuel?

A full 35,000km long space elevator would not be practical. Something of that great length would span many g-forces and you would need a large counter-weight above geo stationary to have zero velocity at ground level. Having that kind of taper from bottom to top would require a huge mass The big difference with a 250km tether is the center of attracting (and mass for that matter :)) can be in many more places. I'm thinking the best idea isn't so much a space elevator but a space slingshot using a pair or more of gravity stabilized fully rotating cables. It's an interesting idea that's been thrown around for many years.

The Higgs Boson particle is supposed to explain where mass "comes from". The problem with a particle explaining mass is that all particles must have mass, thus each Higgs Boson particle would need another particle which would need yet another particle. Most people tend to ignore that interesting paradox. Either way, I don't think we'll know until the Large Hadron Collider comes online at CERN in '05.

He also has a great peice on the Eugenics movement and it's dealing with breeding to improve the human condition. This section also touchs on animal breeding. "The power of man over animal life, in producing whatever varieties of form he pleases, is enormously great. It would seem as though the physical structure of future generations was almost as plastic as clay, under the control of the breeder's will. It is my desire to show, more pointedly than, so far as I am aware, has been attempted before, that mental qualities are equally under control."

In 1869 Francis Galton wrote a book called "Hereditary Genius" on this very subject. It's the first quantitative analysis of the human mental ability. He studied scientists, poets, politicians and many more people, classifying then into nature vs. nurture. In the end he concludes genius is hereditary in humans. Many people consider this book as the creator of the nature vs. nurture argument. He puts forth a great deal of stats in the book, something I find many case studies to be missing.

We need something non-flammable and far less toxic. Maybe a zinc-air solution.
