I thought the news posts about slinkies were the reason to read slashdot? Or posts about someone asking what what degree he should get? Or the fact that slashdot ignores anything remotely important?
Do people even bother reading his articles anymore? I know I shouldn't but I always feel tempted to read them hoping that he will apologize for not being qualified or unbiased enough to write anything. OR he could write a good article. Yeah. Right.
FYI: Black Hawk down was loosely based on a real event and it was a crock of shit if you are not american. And not all your readers are americans, so you should change your style.
Thanks.
There are plenty of uses the 3G network. Its not only for cell phones. It can be used for PDAs (imagine the Treo with 3G). Or my laptop could have a 3G card so I can get some fast internet access anywhere. Cars could also use it to deliver information based on your whereabouts (or a computer in the backseat).
This technology is terrific and I think it will be a big boost for PDAs.
The fact that an "Introduction to Linux" book weighs more then my little cousin is a problem. The main problem with Linux is the steep learning curve if you're new to it. My grand father has trouble using windows. Imagine him trying to compile a kernel. Yes Linux is powerful, yes it is stable. But it will never be popular to the consumer until a 10 year old boy can use it without having a mail order degree in computer science.
I think it's unfair to call people stupid. You can not expect people who have never had to compile a kernel to be comfortable with linux. If I through you into Malaysia would you be stupid because you don't understand the culture or the language? No. Users just need to have better documentation for people who are not necessarily programmers.
I run both linux and windows. They both have their share of problems but I chose to use windows most often. Its true that most people who run windows dont know how to use a computer properly and most of the crashes in the world happen to those people. Put those people on a linux box and it will be 100x worst. Its all about level of knowledge and experience. I know how to run a windows machine and thats why I never have any problems with it. I can keep it on for weeks (while running games, opera, IE, outlook etc..)
The war between Windows and Linux has to stop. The people who say Linux sucks probably just dont know how to use it properly and the same goes for people who use windows. If used properly both perform exceptionally well.
I must say many people who left linux years ago have not tried windows since windows 98. Windows 2000 is a tremendous step up from windows 98.
I'll say it again, both operating systems are fine if you know what you're doing. And even if you don't sometimes...
But I guess if I didnt have access to a full MSDN subscription (I get every microsoft product) it makes it alot smarter to stick with windows. I've considered making the switch to OS X but darn, they are expensive.
I don't think they will be making the C++ builder. Probably just the compiler. Why? The article in InfoWorld quotes Borland saying they want their Unix users to migrate to Linux. Borland has no unix C++ builder.
I had the same problem but with my Pentium 4. When I installed the nvidia drivers the system became very unstabled and crashed often. But hey, I could start tux racer and thats the reason I installed it in the first place. But that problem was only in the latest mandrake release (8.1), it worked fine with RedHat (7.2).
In canada the two major Cable providers decided to split up the country and give it to the other one. So instead of having competiting companies in the same area one took over the west of the country and the other the east. This made alot of people made where I live because we had to switch from Shaws to the lesser company (Rogers). So this is already happening.
You are right, AOL might be interested in developing services for set top boxes or linux pdas or anything else that runs on linux for that matter.
I think 2001 had it all wrong, the computer will be called AOL and it will be running linux. "You've got mail Dave."
Maybe they're just buying redhat for leverage or backup. Seeing how microsoft always find some way to make the competition invisible and inaccessible to the new user they might be scared that AOL be blocked or stunted by Microsoft in order to make MSN more popular. With a linux giant AOL could always say "Give us what we want... or else."
I dont think anyone has anything to worry about. People wont know they are using linux. They will probably just make some really used friendly environment much like the ones in internet appliances. It will just simply be using the linux kernel and redhat technologies. I seriously doubt aol would sell linux as we know it. Maybe it will use the mozilla/netscape interface mentioned on slashdot not long ago? (about the internet appliance that ran linux and netscape interface)

It might be because RedHat is an american company. Mandrake is based in europe and traded on the european stock market.
They've been selling these radios out here [in Toronto] for arround a year.
