  1. Haven't Used it in years on Why Johnny Can't Handwrite · · Score: 1

I haven't used cursive in years... For me it never was fast and personally I think it looks ugly. Call me crazy but given a page of print and a page of cursive, I'm gonna be reading the printed version. Usually teachers were impressed that I typed assignments... Little did they know I can type MUCH faster than I can write. Give me someone that can write 80-100wpm in cursive or not, and I'll stop taking interest in the written word again.

If you didn't know Apache lives on X you may not know is PHP is installed too, it's just not activated. In the terminal: change two lines in /etc/httpd/httpd/conf (you'll have to sudo). When you find the lin #LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so (or something close) uncomment it (take away the pound). Do the same for #Add module mod_php4.c Now you have to add in the mime types, when you see the line AddType application/x-tar .tgz add these two below: AddType application/x-httpd-php .php AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps now save the file. You can use emacs or something but I'm usually lazy and use pico. You can even use BBedit if you want, but that takes more explaining... have fun! You can also download a binary for MySQL (one click and you're databasing).

In the event that it ever is, I'll be on the phone in a heart beat :-D (and then send the logs in for the study)

  5. Re:Clawhammer for me. on IBM to Release 64-Bit, 1.8GHz Processor in 2003 · · Score: 1

Economists define economic costs as explicit costs (stuff you write a check for) AND implicit costs (whatever could have been made if you didn't do whatever you did). In your case your implicit costs are: A) The time looking for the parts B) Putting together the box C) The profit you could have made by selling the machine instead of keeping it Accounting costs are just explicit costs so they are usually lower. The accounting cost for owning a PC may be cheaper, but the economic cost for owning a Mac is lower. For instance, I haven't had a virus in 15 years. I don't spend time fixing things, it just keeps on working. If you add up all the hours that you fix your computer and multiply that by what you could be getting if you were fixing someone else's you'll soon see how much higher a PC's TCO is. Hope this helps!

  7. Street Team on Online Marketing for an Indie Band? · · Score: 1

I'm writing Street Team software for The Juliana Theory right now... What it does... Takes registrations online from hardcore fans (I'm assuming the band in question has some). It dumps the info into MySQL and then with some PHP you can do a lot with it. If you want to give flyers to all your fans in the area of your next tour, a few clicks and bam you email all the fans. Need to alert everyone in Tampa, FL to call into the radio to get some airplay? Just a few clicks and you've emailed everyone near Tampa. Want to send out links to a prerelease of your album? Send it to your street team and then word of mouth will spread it. If your band is good your street team will spread the word. It has worked out for lots of bands. I'm not done with the code yet, but if you want a copy just let me know, jonATmacmerc.com. Good luck!

I will bet that he's never used X. He probably doesn't even own a Mac. He's just one of the typical Windows-Using-Mac-Bashing-Even-Though-They've-Neve r-Used-One-Before people. I suspect this because: A. It runs great on my G4 400... if he had any dual cpu system it'd have to be twice as fast as this one. B. He's insane if he thinks X needs a 22" screen. My 17" is pumping it out great. The cinema monitors are great, he may have saw one at the Apple store and thought it was needed because of the 128x128 icons they used on it. C. Ram's cheap but you still dont NEED 512. I was running it with 192 just fine until i saw how cheap it was. If you can afford Dual CPU's howabout 50 bones for RAM? What do you think? btw I am compiling MySQL and PHP tonight... FUN!

I wish I could install StarOffice like everyone on Linux... maybe a Mac version will come out.

Stop it with the M$ owns Apple... in all reality they own crap. Anyone with some $$$ could buy just as much right now. The fact that M$ owns a little Apple stock is not the reason they made Office for X. The reason is that by doing so M$ with make a ton of cash. If they make it available for *nix they won't make money because everyone on *nix is all about free software and NO Microsoft.

  12. Re:Or.... on LotR Takes Top Spot on IMDB · · Score: 1

We learned in stats class that these kinda polls suck... only people that REALLY LIKE the movier or REALLY HATE the movie will vote. It takes motivation to go do... the same with calling up Fox News for one of their polls or calling a radio station. The results are always skewed. It's not surprising that LoTR got such a high rating, it's got a lot of fans even before everyone got to see it. Also 11,000 votes is a pretty weak sample to base the best movie ever on. About 10 times that would be a lot more accurate. One more weak point is undercoverage... only people with internet access and members of IMDB could even think about voting. This really isn't a fair sample... I dunno though I still gotta go check out the movie myself :)
