Problem in Sweden is, if Telia raises the price to $100 a month, if you want DSL, that's basically your only option unless you live in one of the major cities. Skanova (owned by Telia) owns the physical carriers, Telia Internet Services leases them from Skanova at a high cost, Skanova makes a lot of money for their dear mother Telia, Internet Services makes a LOT less, but hey, Telia as a corp makes enough to keep it afloat. Daughter companies exchange money back and forth basically.

However, enter 3rd party ISP, if they want to provide DSL they HAVE to lease carriers from Skanova, unless they want to dig down their own. Skanova eats the profit, smaller ISP makes barely enough to get by, if even that, Telia is happy, consumer is told to bend over, spread, and smile.

I dunno what the content is on the CD of PC mags in the US, but here (Sweden) the "common user" mags tend to have a lot of the necessary software needed for everyday stuff. MSIE, NS, Opera, WinZip, directX etc, the textual content would be stuff like changing desktop themes, installing a printer or some other plug-in hardware and so on. This appeals the common user since they can get some guidance on how to use their PC at their own level.

To these users, I'm not so sure it would matter if the OEM reseller asked them what browser they'd like installed with their OS.

Tech:Ok sir, just about done, now, what browser would you like with your computer?
    Customer:Uhm, what options is there?
Tech:Well, there's Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Explorer, and Opera by a norweigan company.
Customer:Microsoft? That's what comes with my puter right? So it should work well together, I'll take the Microsoft one...

That kind of user will most likely not care what browser is on his machine as long as it can download the internet. :-)

If a user/customer doesn't know what the options are or what they mean, he'll go for the easiest or most familiar option, all it takes is seing some puter magazine with content that is of interest to him, and he'll have a CD with a wider selection of browsers and he'll know that they exist.

I fail to see how AOL buying RH would be a bad thing for Linux as an OS, if the masses love it, great, if the nerds hate it, what's different from todays situation Linux vs Windows? The Linux users with know-how will simply pick another distro if RH becomes too AOLidized. (Look, I invented a word)

There is of course a risk that RH under AOL control will fail miserably and go under, but then, I doubt that risk would increase even the slightest from the current situation.

This is bad news for anyone dabbling in software development, you make a piece of software to do something (in your opinion) useful, release it on your website where a few dozen download it, it spreads a bit more, and suddenly, someone somewhere does something that provokes your app to crash, or be used, in a nasty way taking out their box and the boxes on that network.

Now you suddenly find yourself with a fresh lawsuit in your mail claiming you're responsible for the couple hundred thousand dollars worth of damage done to a company in some remote place you've never heard of...

This sounds like an excellent way to deter anyone from ever releasing anything that's not tested and tested again, meaning development for a hobby will be a lot tougher.

I see a suggestion like this working only after a developer clearly states and guarantees that his software will not in any way harm the users equipment, or, very gross neglect from the developer and failing to provide even rudimentary security.
