Naturally with an encrypted disk your going to have slower throughput. I've been considering setting up some sort delayed encryption scheme where you have a 10-20GiB area of unencrypted space, when something gets written to this portion it will be encrypted at a later time. I'm thinking it may be possible with unionfs/aufs or maybe with a custom script or FUSE filesystem.
Anyway, if your situation will permit data not be encrypted immediately, this would be a good compromise between speed and security....
This question was interesting: How does the NPRM protect Privacy of license holders?
Continuing to protect the privacy of license holders was a key consideration for DHS in the development of this NPRM, which contains a detailed analysis of the three key privacy issues posed by the Act: (1) the connectivity of the databases; (2) the protection of the personal information stored in the State databases; and (3) the protection of the personal information stored on machine readable technology on the DL/IDs. We invite comments on whether the steps outlined within the NPRM are appropriate and adequate.
Okay, so they covered the three things that the feds will have control over. Can they secure it? I doubt it, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Moving on to another question from the FAQ...
How long will a REAL ID license be valid for?
The proposed regulation requires that REAL ID licenses be valid for a period limited to eight years. If a state has maintained the source document images, the DMV may re-verify that information without requiring that the applicant re-present the source documents. If, however, the State does not have the information and images of source documents at the time of the renewal, the State would need to require the applicant to re-submit any appropriate, missing documentation.
Now they expect all the DMVs across the states to scan, store, and protect our personal documents. Sure the states already have some of this, but now we are putting it in the hands of the DMVs. I can only imagine how our data and documents will be stored and who will have access to them.
Finally someone got it right. I have to add GNU screen to the list, I cant live without.
Dual monitors also helps... On the left I keep email (mutt), jabber, browser, etc. On the right monitor I have a fullscreen terminal running GNU screen. Minimizes wasteful "mouse time":-)
I agree with this as well... but alas... most ISPs are not doing either. As far as Im concerned... if your infected.. you get shutoff till its fixed. This doesnt really decrease the workload of the ISP however... cus u know everyone they cutoff is going to phone in anyway.
They dont even have to call the customer... You could very easily write a script uses some way to check for code red... then take that IP and see what the mac is, using the DHCP table you should be able to say this mac belongs to modem XYZ which is owned by John Doe.. then email the poor sap... all automated.
I know its possible.... im sure they wouldnt waste time if someone was uncapping their modem.
... that I see the most from new Mandrake users(but not new linux users) are simple things that Mandrake does and does better than other distros but the people have not yet learned the 'mandrake' way.
For example.. installing packages... people try to solve dependencies on their own. If they would just use urpmi (or rpmdrake) it would take care of it for them.
drakconf is an awesome tool.
It would be nice if at the end of the install it asks if u would like to add a internet source for further installations... its nice to not have to use the cds.
Anyhow, once people learn to do things the 'mandrake' way (aka the easier way) they tend to love it.
I am surprised the submitter did not mention Schedules Direct. It is not free, but it should have been mentioned.
Anyway, check it out.

They must have anticipated this, its obviously why they built several gigantic mirrors. And you thought it was only for burning up raging pirates.
In other news.... childhood obesity is up 89%!

Extremely unique.... damn I miss that game.
I ran into this issue lastnight, I just told mythtv to stop recording the show 1 minute early and the problem was solved.
