Actually...I thought the plating thing was kinda cool.
If you listened, they said "polarize the plating." Apparently they polarize the magnetic field generated by the plating, thus repelling certain energies. It would make sense (at least in my fictional imagination) that the "polarizor" could be damaged, or that too much of the energy could be dispelled, thus rendering the plates no longer polarized....that's prolly (at least in my imagination) what they meant when they said that the plating was broke:).
