  1. Re:Will.. on More Linux Activity in German Government · · Score: 1
I guess you could say that but I'd rather put it like this: The idea of free software may in parts go along with the idea of socialism. But then again we all know that the real existing socialism never had anything to do with its initial ideas.

So it's more like free speech vs. government / corporation power. Liberalism if you will. Very soon quite a few corporations will be as powerful as governments anyway and some already are.

  2. Re:"Fall over" features on Open Source Microsoft Exchange Replacements? · · Score: 0, Troll

    This is one cool post!

Looking at Exchange/Outlook from the outside makes it look pretty straight forward and even reasonably priced. But when you actually start using it, training people to use the groupware functionality and extending licenses and services like backup, spam- and virus-filtering, that's where the horror starts that you just talked about.

But of course you paid the software assurance in order to have a continuous concept for the future so management will not allow any changes that mean giving up the investments already made.

There's no way out of this hell. Start using Exchange today and make sure you've already sold your soul.

Yes, BB is pretty cool. But:

I had used the Lite version for quite a while and when they started charging for that, Hydra came along and made me switch (http://hydra.globalse.org) -- pretty cool program. Group-Editing with Rendezvous, freeware and such.

Just waiting for Apple to get their Finder-FTP working with read/write!

  4. We shall prevail! on Stations Can't Play Crippled Music Disks · · Score: 1

These RIAA people don't get it... even if they are trying to outsmart everyone with all this DRM- and control-technology, bully us with their lawyers and try to get radio stations to buy special made equipment...

This is a free market world! The money flow depends on this freedom! What are they going to get? Nothing!

I'm not buying anything anymore. And a lot of people I know aren't either. No CDs, no DVDs, no nothing. I'm waiting until they cut the bullshit and let me take advantage of my rights and make the price right again for all that media stuff.

Until then, I'll just NOT listen to music and I'll play outside instead of watching DVDs. Healthier anyway... and I won't go through the trouble of downloading gigs of pirated music and movies either just because these sh17h43dz don't get it.

You're free to join me. Radiostations - get out your old records and play some 60ies sound until then. What counts is p a r t y !

  5. why scsi at all? on Enterprise-class ATA Drives · · Score: 4, Interesting

i've gone through so many server scsi disks here that were really expensive. seems like the quality really isn't any better than ide.

all you want to avoid is getting rid of your information that is stored on the disks. any responsible it-manager will buy raid systems so it doesn't really matter if you pop a broken scsi or ide disc out of the array and replace it.

i don't see any point in buying scsi with expensive discs, expensive controllers and expensive cables.

  6. independence ? on Community Wifi Feeds Community Cable in NYC · · Score: 4, Interesting

i wonder if all this community activity will turn into a movement that actually makes all those little subnetworks (wifi and cable connected) into kind of a sub-net culture that will be independend of the big, commercial internet.

will they be controlled by the world's governments soon? will corporations try to switch them off?

anyway this is exciting. i think with dmca-legislations hanging over heads of the people in different countries all over the world, this is kind of a light in the darkness.

    am i too naive?

  7. porn? yes! somehow. on Why Does Manga Succeed Where American Comics Fail? · · Score: 3, Interesting

i find that most manga comic characters seem to have that subtle sex appeal that makes them interesting. it's not that i don't like donald duck but he doesn't have that expression on his face that i see with a lot of manga stars.

and i'm not talking about the pr0n stuff which i personally can't really find very pr0nific.

  10. Carrara Studio 2 is good. on Which 3D Rendering Package Do You Recommend? · · Score: 3, Informative

I have taken a look at a few 3D Applications and found Carrara Studio 2 to be very nicely usable. It doesn't comply with Aqua but that's not a problem: it uses kind of a fullscreen UI which is extremely nice to use and doesn't interfere with your screen resolution.

If you can't get far enough with Carrara, give Cinema 4D a try.
