"Probably 90% of Windows users aren't geeks. Obviously that is a totally unsubstantiated guess. But regardless, what's your point?"
From the point of view you're thinking about using linux (and forcing your mom to compile GUI just to collect daily mail), it really doesn't matter. Where would be the point in that. And yes, average Windows user is below standard knowledge. And you're getting closer to make this kind of image from your self.:-)
Yes, I somehow replaced *8 hours* with *multiple computers*! Sorry.:-(

Point c. in one of my previous posts.:-) ---- as it was obvious from my first post, I wasn't forcing you, I was suggesting you, and now you just got borring, I found your opinion in fact interesting, so please go play Solitaire, be a guru to your familly and borre your self not others.

Probably 90% of Windows users aren't geeks.
See you've got two computers lessthan me, but it doesn't mather. Read last part of your post where's the sense here, "mom compiling GUI?", guess I've got to learn my granfather to do that (he's dead already). My mom and father are using linux pretty well. In fact I've disabled everything in a system and take every precaution. Beats installing Windows every 3 or 6 months. Same system for 2 years now and no complaints from them. But I've never forced them to compile something. Ultra simple environment defined for their usage and that's it. From this post you're obvious not really linux GUI user. (hope I formed that correctly)
He says he's a professional. Hope you've noticed that he was showing pretty high terms and linux servers.
If you'd read my comment you'd see that I agreed to that points. (about your points except pretty???? and for you try to make divx work well) Noticed "c. Stick with what you were doing, nobody will force you" in my post?
Things that I didn't agreed too: 1. Low performance of Divx (Performance is much higher than Windows) 2. Allways setting up numerous control panels
I just posted him a tip how to do that well, and how to to that, so it wouldn't need to do that again.
About arrogant, I think you're a bit out off line here. You should read your post again.
And a little tip for you "If you'd like to be concidered seriously in your life, grow up or stick with C64 and PS2"
Divx already worked. Xine get installed with Mandrake. (not really distro of my choice, but it was the first to support some specific features of my notebook). Otherwise Xine > RPM > Install > Watch 1. If you didn't noticed "post is about GNOME" 2. You shouldn't be offenced, here's why. How many people is using Windows? How many are geeks? What is average user in what field? Am I resonable to say what I've said? 3. We've got same hobbies I guess? Network is my field of interests. But you were the one that was complaining not me. I've just pointed out how you wouldn't need to do that more than once. Believe me I could extend this thing further.
Point of my view was, you said you're a professional, you complained about *UI*, I'm a professional, I've boosted my *UI* to speed up my needs, Result I've pointed you out how to do it.
If you were offended I'm sorry (wasn't intended), but I wasn't forcing you to anything, just tryed to make few points about unresonable complaining. Few of my friends which I respect them are completely CLI not GUI types. They tryed to set it up them selves, but at the end, they asked me. Now they're pretty happy with their GUI and they're using it as well. Only need for me to jump in is if somebody buys new PC.
I always set up Linux boxes for my friends, pro's and newbies. I've got time since I've switched to Linux servers and I'm administering completely remotely. Now I'll be applying my own software on Linux Desktop boxes and things will improve even more (at least remote administration part, user part is something I can't predict).
Like first I agree with the post about usability with you. Especially for newcomers and weekend users. What I don't agree with is your performance description and configuration troubles. You've expressed (and showed your knowledge) that with divx playing sketchy and other comments about UI.
Like first divx. Works like hell for me and for all of my converted friends. Way better than windoze. My best result is watching divx, formating floppy, burning cd, listening to mp3, and meanwhile opening staroffice. All that on Celeron 400 (wanted to test low end machine). About picture being sketchy, mplayer set with correct parameters has best picture based on my testing.
I guess that the main thing you've done wrong, was testing gnome. Anyone reading your comment would say, that UI that you want is KDE and not GNOME.
KDE is not for tweakers like me, but usefull for Windowze users, that want to become Linux users on a fast lane. I personally wanna tweak every bit of my desktop and make additional lower underlaying scripts, to get job done as fast as it gets. For that I really don't consider waste of time. Every new distro takes me about a day to adapt my changes to it, but hey, I don't need to install software/home/$user (and other partitions that I expect to work immidietly) works great.
So in conclusion I give you few tips to better usage so you wouldn't need to complain about settings anymore. Tips for a first install: a. Hardway 1. Reconsider install partitions well (make/home this one will not be formated anymore, also by your choices partitions you would like automatically to preserve) 2. Install 3. Make some/home/System> bin etc lib sbin fonts startup usr 3.1. If you're geeky enough put some your rc.d inside of that etc and execute as a deamon from original/etc/rc.d when starting system, personally I don't restart machine when is set up my redhat 7.2 has uptime from 4 days after release 3.2. Be carefull about security 4. add bin and sbin and others to your $HOME/bash_profile 5. decide which configurations you'd like to preserve but not/etc/fstab or/etc/rc.d and few others and make links to/home/System/etc/ 6. Install additional system software by making chroot or specifiying/home/System as default root for install so software wouldn't get erased when you'd install new version of OS 7. Add some deamon of your choice that tracks changed files in fonts folder and here is your font manager best there is 8. After that start tweaking your desktop manager 8.1. Set file type owners 8.2. Browsing 8.3. etc 9. Enjoy until new release 10. Install new release (don't format home) 11. start your etc configuration replacment script to restore links to your configuration 12. Tweak new things in new version 13. Enjoy this version until new release
b. Have some friend that knows how to tweak system like that do tweaking
c. Stick with what you were doing, nobody will force you
Don't wanna start flame war about KDE and GNOME, same tweak applies for KDE also. What I was reffering is that KDE is preset for user, GNOME not (allows us to choose our tools, but it wouldn't do bad if preset would be an option too for newcomers, as in my case I wanna do it my self).
Like the man said, not if you have a conscience. Personally I'm using OOS while it has the freedom of use and better support.
As in case pirating software. It's harder and harder to get it pirated. More and more people refuses to do that. I would sell proprietary software, give "now no way, in the old days yes". I've learned most of my friends how not to give proprietary software.
In fact, if you're too cheap to buy MSOffice, get your self OpenOffice, I personally bought StarOffice (just to support the project), but I use OpenOffice, because of more regular updates.
If you're too cheap to buy your self Photoshop, use Gimp like I do, PS just isn't usefull in my field of work, don't need CMYK, for drawing, well Gimp is just better and more suitable.
This is the first post I find interesting and correct on some points.
Somehow this opinion of yours is correct, but on the other hand, after that, you'd put a bad name on (open source=a gamble for your company) all OOS products. This would be a mass of commercials of "how not to gamble, go secure". Even though that's not true.
For average user, that knows almost nothing about security, this would be just a good commercial for proprietary software.
To conclude my opinion: LAW SHOULD BE MORE STRICT Either you're doing OOS and you're not liable (since you give it away for free), or you're selling software and you're automatically liable for what you're selling. Clauses for both parties should not be acceptable.
Common aspects of liability are not really significant. Every comoany pushes it's product as soon as it's barely working, this products are being pushed untested (or barely tested). One of the greatest examples is Microsoft, which pushes products that surelly contain security holes. One point of view is that this security holes benefit company to spy easily on users actions, the other one is lack of testing.
Trouble of liability is that everybody expects greater liability of GPL products than proprietary ones. Usualy OOS is more secure and more tested, but to expect liability of product that's is insane. (at least as long as Microsofts clause about 0.5$ is valid)
In all of my cases that involved security or patches, I get much better support from OOS projects than proprietary ones. For instance contacting Corel or Microsoft is quite painfull, either they don't have a patch, don't know or in the worst case they don't even know that patch for solution already exists.
If you take to consideration all of 5 points, what do you get? 1. Greater expectations of proprietary software (liability must be included, so I really don't know if Microsoft could push another project like IIS or IE, without 0.5$ clause they'd be dead and burried in no time) 2. Attack on OOS, where people are giving software for free, but they are liable for that??? Don't know but this is insane. OOS projects were always either well support or they died, but in 99% of cases I felt I've got a great support, either I got an answer or an explanation, in one case only I didn't get an answer and I didn't really bothered, I just swaped to another one that supported my needs well.
So if you ask me liability was talked about too much. Talk rather about who should be liable and who should not be liable. This is a real question, not liability itself.
As far as I understand it(god help, even I could be wrong, so don't be offended), issue is that all standards that IBM and M$ can prove rights for are not in W3C.
And now stupid question, what stops web designers and web apps programmers not to code W3C supported only. (W3C is part of EULA isn't it, and all I'm hearing that EULA has C# standards so it can't be forked from M$ side, this could prove wrong, or not):-(
Must admit that web apps aren't my field so, I'd like if someone would mod me to understand this better this would be appreciated.
"2. The laws intended to protect digital media content rights owners prevent utilities to be developed to fully utilize existing content thus hindering adoption of digital television products."
Who is the owner of digital data when I buy DVD? Me or company that produced DVD? I've never seen any car making company to demand the right to car they sold after somebody already bought it. To make an example. 1. It's illegal to have OUR car YOU've bought parked in a shadow. Nobody will see the brightness of colors he has. 2. It's illegal to scratch OUR car. You will be prosecuted. 3. It's illegal to park OUR car side by side of some better car. Go away and search for car of lower quality to make OUR look better. 4. You're not allowed to leave it on open. You've got to park it in a toll-pay garage.
There is a law concerning freedom of speech, but there is no law for free choice of OS or using OSS. How is this possible?
You can't buy, machine without OS (Windows), this means Open Source OS does not exists. ???
What am I using now if not Open source OS?...???... Linux? Am I a criminal? No, I don't use any part of software that wouldn't be bought or OSS. And I bought for more than 20000$ worth of software for my company. Do I feel like being a criminal for helping in OSS projects? It's just like UNICEF (or any free organisation) is a criminal too, in the end thay are giving help for free. Last time I checked that, they haven't charge for that. So in my case... There are projects that I wanna charge for, and there are projects that I wanna give to the comunity for free, so if I'm not feeling robbed, who is entitled to feel that for me? Politicians maybe? I guess that nobody in high position really cares, as long as they have provisions and all of us common people will just wait for Orwells "1984".
I know I'm giving only questions not answers? But, this are the points that really interest me?
That's something I really agree. Two of my (proffesional (intended mispeeling)) friends tryed to install it. No one was comfortable to use Linux, both were too proud to read man, ask or look information on Internet. They just haven't get it.
On the other side. I gave Linux to few of my friends that were not professionals, most of them felt quite well at home.
I guess moving to Linux is just connected with size of brain (more he (only) thinks he has, lesser is a chance to move).
I think there's a greater problem as VNC, because VNC is free. What about all this people that bought Citrix clients. They also access and control Windows desktop with non-Microsoft product. I can't imagine that Citrix reseller would tell you that even though you've purchased a valid license, you've still got to buy access client from Microsoft too.
Story reminds me on time when I needed to purchase Terminal server. With all the licenses needed (you need WinNT + client licenses + terminal server, but funny is that client side is even more expensive because every client needs Win98 license + WinNT full license + Terminal server access license) I just smiled my self and felt quite happy about my decision to move bussines to Linux.
I don't know, but that makes accessing WinXP trough SSH illegal too. But where is some Microsoft WinXP SSH client.
It might came a bit out off topic, but story reminds me on Windows license stickers, that must be sticked on every computer that you sell Windows with. I sell only well designed and expensive cases (otherwise I rather avoid that job), this could break their level of class. It's like some Ferrari reseller would put a sticker on the car he just sold, but to get back. There has come to dispue about this topic and dispute was over the moment I asked for damage covering. You can't sell classy PC case with stickers on it. This just isn't way to do bussines, it's more like cow branding to which ranch do they belong.
Now in these days of XP licensing, I can't say I haven't expected something like that. Nobody can say that without a lie, even the toughest Microsoft fans.
To get a little more out off topic (but with a point again). Interesting is how they protect their rights. And what kind of material do they use to lower quality of other products. Recentlly I recived two CD-s for Windows 2000 resellers "How to compete with Linux environment". I don't think that I've ever read this many "bullshit" in my life as I've reada in that material. Just to cover some points (Comparing Win2000AdvSrv with Redhat 6.0, while document is dated late 2001, Linux has no 1000Mbit eth support, Linux has no VPN support, Linux has no PPP dialer, etc, while other file (dated few days in difference) comparing Samba with Win2000 says that weak point of Samba 2.2 is that it doesn't come preinstalled on releases prior to 7.2, so you must set it up on your own...).
This (sad) reality (unfortunatelly) shows how over protective (no body count and no regrets) thay are. It seems like they'll soon lack of new enemies and they want their customers to become ones. Now with that legal issue about remote control, they've just made competition alias Citrix harder job to copete with their solutions. It wouldn't surprise me if the next step would be selling licenses for use of non-Microsoft software. As how this software is not confirmed by Microsoft and they've got to approve it so this license would be just covering their expenses to test that software. It's long since they've shown that they're interested in money and not in users benefits.
I know the last claim is off course missed one. But as current events are evolving... Who knows
bout the article let's just say "Predictable and not impresssive anymore"
There may be something positive in that. Maybe they'll succed to go trough this time.
It really doesn't matter what outcome there will be. Long ago, when trial started, most of the people wouldn't even think there could be such thing as Microsoft monopoly.
And now, well, at least people are informed (or some of them at least). Most of them probably don't realize how global this thing is. It is global, I'm not US citizen, but I feel a lot of pressure. They have grown too large and too agresive.
I guess I'm taking the side of oposition, was pretty neutral, but current events have showed that Micorsoft can't play fair game. Somehow I even understand them, competition is getting stronger every day. But to be realistic, this competition isn't competition out of nothing. Microsoft has done great deal to gain former partners as competitors. And with new version of Windows they will be gaining even more of them (at least most of database makers, because of integrating their SQL client into their system). They are just to pushy to compete with all the market. Once they conquered Software (for which now they're loosing the battle, slowly but surely) they'll try to conquer Hardware (Xbox and probably their PCs)
It looks like next year when they'll complete all of computer market, they'll probably try to compete with car companys, and Henry Ford will be suing them for illegal competition.
My final judgement is firmly oposition. It has come to that moment, when I decided to move my bussines on Linux. I must admit, two or three things are a bit lacking (in bussines view of special software, but nothing what will wouldn't overcome) but the will for privacy is just too strong.
Let's say!
Again one of KDE fans. Just tell me how Gnome is losing blood. I personaly avoid using KDE since KDE is slow and too Windows like. GNOME also makes me posible of configuring things runing on my desktop. Not being forced to use which Window manager makes me realy happy.
I could say KDE is dead. It's so fuckin' slow.
Ok, but enough don't You think You all are being stupid arguing KDE is better GNOME is better.
THEME SONG IS THAT GNOME 2.0 HASN'T BEEN USED ON SOLARIS.
THIS WAS NOT TO BE EXPECTED. IF YOU'D READ SUN'S ARTICLES YOU'D SEE THAT SUN'S ENGINEER'S ARE BEGINING THE REAL PORT ABOUT TWO OR THREE MONTHS.
THE ARTICLE ABOUT STAROFFICE NOT BEEING GNOME-LIKE.
However all of You! "kde is better, gnome is better" GO PLAY ON THE PLAYGROUD. Both projects are good.
I as a *NIX person could hardly imagine my self using Windowsh KDE. But I also respect people using KDE.
THERE'S ONE MORE QUESTION: "HAS ANYONE OF YOU "my is better" CONTRIBUTED ANYTHING.
Hail to the Open source
I think you missed a bit of text.
HP is not moving to Windows Blue screen, just moving in different UNIX direction. I don't say that they're dropping Win support.
A little remark. There is so many games for Windows and so little for UNIX. Don't know who is playing more.
Somehow Registry is simple and stupid. Believe me I use all platforms and Windows way of system preferences is the slowest and impossible solution.
MSCE doesn't mean SHIT. Everybody whom I know has it even I, a few (server, desktop, networking,... name it) of them, but not on my request, they forced me. You take exam and You IT. So if would look in the night sky, tell me, WOULD THIS MAKE ME AN ASTRONAUT.
Putting Your MSCE shows your real knowledge.
I think this is correct because both companies somehow equaly differ in high and low points of production. In my opinion this was something to expect because the company would spend too much money for duplicate development. This is just a first step. Equaly will happen in other production branches.
In my opinion moving to Linux is smart move. Put inside your own knowledge and what you get is perfect. Low cost system with all the benefits HPUX , Tru64 and VMS had.
The same moving to Linux are making both SUN and IBM. They just don't have major merging in progress so drastical company restructuring is not necesary.
MY PREDICTION (maybe incorect, but...)
The same make is to be expected from SGI soon. SGI must lower the production costs for workstation computers to lower the price.
MY HOPE>>
Somehow I hope that people who were laid off will continue their work in UNIX direction> I used HPUX and loved it.... Infact UNIX is my favorite operating system. No one of my 4 computers has never crashed in last two years (not even freezed) and they are all turned on almost all the time and in active use.

Games, transgaming's giving pretty good support.
So I think I made my self clear about my opinion.
Which state is so stupid? Remind me to avoid anything from that states
Ok, then sue Microsoft if you can, you should read license before you install software. All you can get is, what 0.5$? And you've paid what??
This is the first post I find interesting and correct on some points.
Somehow this opinion of yours is correct, but on the other hand, after that, you'd put a bad name on (open source=a gamble for your company) all OOS products. This would be a mass of commercials of "how not to gamble, go secure". Even though that's not true.
For average user, that knows almost nothing about security, this would be just a good commercial for proprietary software.
To conclude my opinion: LAW SHOULD BE MORE STRICT
Either you're doing OOS and you're not liable (since you give it away for free), or you're selling software and you're automatically liable for what you're selling. Clauses for both parties should not be acceptable.
And yes, something really has to be done.
1. Greater expectations of proprietary software (liability must be included, so I really don't know if Microsoft could push another project like IIS or IE, without 0.5$ clause they'd be dead and burried in no time)
:-(
And now stupid question, what stops web designers and web apps programmers not to code W3C supported only. (W3C is part of EULA isn't it, and all I'm hearing that EULA has C# standards so it can't be forked from M$ side, this could prove wrong, or not)
Must admit that web apps aren't my field so, I'd like if someone would mod me to understand this better this would be appreciated.
First, open source could be criminals theme, then DVD playback on Open source prohibited in U.S., then this watermarking.
I'm going to sleep an maybe tommorow all articles will be nice as high tech beer glass and no politics.
Not saying that U.S. are bad, but U.S. democracy is going to put people to shut up and pay without thinking.
Looks like American dream was reinvented to version 3. And like new version of Corel Draw or Windows, slower and worster than ever
"2. The laws intended to protect digital media content rights owners
prevent utilities to be developed to fully utilize existing content thus
hindering adoption of digital television products."
I wasn't reffering to traffic regulations.
At least, inteligence of his posting was far better than yours, wouldn't life be nicer without trolls like you?
There is a law concerning freedom of speech, but there is no law for free choice of OS or using OSS. How is this possible?
...???... Linux?
You can't buy, machine without OS (Windows), this means Open Source OS does not exists. ???
What am I using now if not Open source OS?
