My problem is with the whole lack of self-discipline in the field, both with inexperienced and experienced programmers. Too often, people see programming as a pastime, rather than serious work that must be done carefully.
As a side note, in Saskatchewan, MCSEs are not allowed to expand their title, because it's illegal to use the title "Engineer" without being certified by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS).
Until you sell it. Then, just like any other good, it becomes the property of the purchaser.
This whole ideaology that you should be able to take my software and give it to as many people as you want without my permission is known as theft.
No, it's known as copyright infringement. Theft is when I steal a CD from a store (causing them to have one less CD). It is not theft to increase the amount of total wealth in the world (which is what happens when you duplicate something that is valuable).
That's what's going to happen. And it will be because of all of you lazy programmers out there. You know who you are.
You're the ones who think that bug-free code comes from testing and debugging, rather from design. You're the ones who say "with today's processors, I can afford to waste resources here," not realizing that inefficiency accumulates. You're the ones who don't bother to make sure you're checking return codes properly, or checking them at all. You're the ones who spend more time programming and less time planning a large project. You're the ones who think there is such as thing as a "releasable hack", a "production-quality kludge." You're the ones who think open-source is immune to all this.
You're the ones who will quickly dismiss what I'm saying, or nitpick me to death. I don't know why I bother.
Well, the Amiga SDK is a start. Also, note that just because there is currently little better doesn't mean that the status quo is the best thing possible.
I'm not sure if you're agreeing with me or not, but it sounds like you're suggesting that because we tolerate one particular stupidity, we should tolerate all stupidity. That's a dangerous attitude.
As a side note, I think Prohibition failed because it happened all at once. A better approach would have been to ease people into it, (e.g. every 5 years, increase the legal drinking/smoking age by 1 year.)
Wow, do you mean with ash I could use a Pentium III 780 instead of 866? Let's face it, given Moore's law, any speed improvement less than n vs. n^2 is more or less irrelevant.
Maybe, but did you really want the $50 you spent for the 866 to be used in a fat command shell? Most people don't. The other problem is that lately, every developer seems to be saying this, and it's really starting to add up.
And no, the standard argument that "it's only obvious after someone tells you" doesn't apply because I (among probably several others) figured out this trick myself long before I had much access to other people's code/documentation.
*Sigh* When are people going to figure out that our economic system doesn't work without scarcity? It's all the same problem, really.
Wrong, people (at least here) get absolutely wasted on one joint. What's my point? Marijuana is not "mild" when compared to other illegal drugs. Pot-smokers really shouldn't be treated any differently than any abusers of other drugs.
We don't *want* drivers, we just want documentation. Matrox doesn't provide Linux drivers either, but they provide good documentation, and are willing to answer questions developers have. This is the reason why I'm soon going to buy a Matrox card and throw this nearly useless nVidia card into the old scrap parts bin.
Agreed. And say that you're from Ontario or Quebec, since everybody knows the Liberals don't listen to anyone else anyway.
Yeah, all that elaborate encryption... then they give everyone the key.
<rant>How did I get moderated "Redundant" when I posted my comment first?</rant>
Yes, it's a troll, but I'll bite:
Emacs, GCC, glibc. Any questions?
What about "I don't know any language with a non-Latin character set, so I don't really know if it's working anyway."?

You are not entitled to a business model that hinges on restricting others.

As for you first question, that was recently done with Tux Racer - an Open Source project was moved to a closed source license.
What? When did this happen? URL?
Something I've written is something I should be able to exercise power over
Why?

Java applets. They were a goot first-shot at a portable sandbox interface, but there is better.

Well no, but you have to make it look new so you can get people enthusiastic about it. :-/

This actually works pretty well, and it's great for finding broken sh scripts.
Hint: rmdir /misc :-)

Would you like to cite some references where there are patent violations in reiserfs?
Do you know about the current quality of cannabis lately? It's really a different drug than it was in the '60s.
Heh. IIRC, in French, trébucher means "to trip". It looks here like somebody tripped on numerous occasions.
