    Yes, and it's common on the web to have bad HTML that doesn't work on any browser except IE4 (or Netscape). That doesn't make it a good thing. :-)

    You might have actually had to have learned a REAL language like C, using gcc or something. :)

    No... RMS is a moral figurehead. As such, he *must* have zero compromise. It isn't RMS's job to say "You shouldn't do that, but you can if you want to." That would be like the Pope saying "War is okay, sometimes."

    Rather, as the moral figurehead of the free software movement, he must state strongly and simply that "You should not do that."

    Ever set up a second DHCP server on a network that is already served by DHCP? Or are you suggesting sysadmins be not allowed to use DHCP?

    Samba can cause the same problem. If you set it as the master for a certain workgroup (a 1-line configuration file mistake), it will cause serious grief on the Windows machines.

    My experience has shown that whenever you're using a broadcast protocols, it's quite easy to mess everything up.

    Windows may not be anything wonderful, but it's predictable, and we know what the important flaws are, and how to work around them for minimal user impact.

    Interesting. I use Linux because my experience has been that Windows is too unpredictable to be manageable. At least with Linux, if something messes up, it's because I did something, not because I did nothing (except with damn Netscape, grrr).

    The main difference is the new "am1ga" (it's not a REAL "Amiga") system is designed to be compiled into native code, while Java was designed to be interpreted at runtime.

    Hmm... Let's see:

    I'm going to work in metric units, so:
    1000' = 304.8 m

    Since the acceleration of gravity = 9.8 m/s^2, the cat will hit the ground in 7.9 seconds, going 280 km/h (170 mph). (Significant figures minded.)

    So a 1000' cliff would result in a cat that was probably most dead, indeed!

    MP3 only goes up to 48 Ks/s (kilosamples per second) as an input source. So, if you can manage to put a 1GHz sound in raw 48Ks/s, I will be amazed.
