On the subject of descriptive variable names, I've found that having a decent method of identifier completion has helped my programming immensely. Sometimes I start to get lazy and begin to use acronyms that will undoubtibly make no sense in a few days. But if I can just type somthing like _te to get _temperature and so on, its much easier. ctrl-n is for vim, I would imagine there are similar methods in most editors.

I couldn't believe it when my E-commerce profesor at university suggested mass-email as a marketing strategy a few weeks ago. Here's a woman who, for all intents and purposes, should be a little more forward thinking, yet she preaches this filth in a college classroom. I think the problem is, people just don't understand or care to gain understanding of the consequences of their actions. Until the public rejects this stuff in totality, this is a viable business strategy, and thats all that matters.
My experience was very different, but thats because all purchasing decisions on non-essential items are best routed through my signifigant other before execution, lest I be prepared for scolding and/or the couch =] We are still poor college students, so two years ago a playstation was pretty low priority. In this case, a DVD player was something I could pitch to my girlfriend, since we had always been movie rental fans. If it were not for that feature, I doubt I would of been able to get one without resorting to drastic measures.
I'm not sure what percentage of households are similar to mine, but I imagine the perception that gaming machines are for kids is widespread, and being able to make them have more 'responsible' features like DVD playback and media center capabilities might make them more justifiable for an 'adult' budget.
I have no first hand knowledge in the subject, but perhaps this link to citeseer will help.
