    If you're not high enough academically to enter state-run institutions

    If your academics aren't good enough to get you into the local state university, you should not go to college. It will end up saddling you with enormous bills that you will spend 20 years trying to pay off, and at the end of that time you'll be much worse off than if you had just gotten a job at 18 and worked.

    The value of getting paid today is not zero. That's the problem with your argument. Even if there's zero inflation, $100k ten years from now is not as valuable as $100k right now.

    Businesses used to have straight-up IQ tests they administered to potential employees. Duke Power used them to further racist ends, and so businesses can't use IQ tests any more. Don't blame the vast majority of businesses (who are blameless) for the misbehavior of a few.

    OTOH under a mining-based system you have massive inflation when, say, the Americas are discovered and you start bringing in massive amounts of gold and silver you stole there.

    Metals are just as arbitrary as fiat money. If you want inherent value, base your currency on fresh water, preserved foods, and weapons.

    The value of the dollar is ultimately determined by the fact that taxation agencies (the IRS and state equivalents) won't let you pay your taxes in anything other than dollars.

    I'm a Republican, and I'd vote for Hillary over any of the jackanapes the Republican party is putting up. They have a great farm team and they keep ditching it for weak candidates. I'd feel bad about it, except that the D pick of Obama over Hillary in '08 was so mind-bogglingly stupid that your side must be just as bad as mine ;)

    Right, because voting Democrat is a logical move for someone who wants a smaller, cheaper federal government. The Republicans may not act on that idea, but at least they pretend to care.

    I'm guessing you know very few former military personnel. Not a lot of cop types in the bunch.

    Personal theory follows, ignore, comment, whatever. This is just a musing on general trends.
    I've known a handful of cops. Their reasons for becoming one are varied, but the one constant is a rules-based view of the world. There are rules, and if you break the rules, you must be punished. The soldiers I've known tend to be more focused on harm: if you broke the rules, but nobody got hurt, then let it slide; conversely, if you followed the letter of the law but ended up fucking people over, they'd as soon kill you as look at you.

    Cops can't really be any other way, because we can't let law enforcement be completely whimsical and subjective. But I know which group of people I'd rather hang out with.

    "Bush was unpopular with a lot of conservatives" does not mean "conservatives would rather stay home and have President Kerry than turn out for Bush".

    I'm sure you did get a lot of crap for opposing the TSA, much of it from conservatives, but there were some conservatives who were very opposed to it. They just weren't the talking heads of the movement.

    It might just suck, but I've never been happy with those when riding in someone else's car, either. I think I'm just picky about it. I adjust mine pretty constantly to give me what I want. It's especially troublesome when I'm running the AC to dehumidify and subsequently having to heat the air. It's a Toyota, FWIW.

    A surprising number of people haven't changed cards in the last 5-10 years. I'm still using a nearly 20-year-old card. I have, however, recently realized that I was leaving all sorts of benefits on the table and have started mile-collecting.

    The problem with Netflix was that they tried to spin it as doing the customer a favor. If the email they sent me had said "Sorry Mr. Demonlapin, we have to raise prices because streaming bandwidth and streaming rights are costing us a lot of money" I'd have been perfectly satisfied - not happy, of course, I don't like a rise in rates, but satisfied. Instead they tried to tell me how they were going to save me $1 a month by taking away either streaming or the DVDs.

    Er, you heat to 20 C. You don't cool to it, unless you really like insane power bills. I generally cool my house to 24 C, although that's mostly for dehumidification.

    Does that really work well? I've got a programmable thermostat (though not that nice of one) and setting it to pull the house temp up for waking up results in hot air in all the rooms while the walls warm up. (I have to leave doors closed to keep the cats out of the bedrooms, but there's at least a 1" gap under every door so we can have good air exchange.)

    Confusingly, the air conditioners in cars that have temperature settings usually are proportional, to my great irritation. My car has one of those dial-a-temp things. I hate it, but I would have had to do without the sat nav and nice stereo to get the "normal" climate controls.
