Hey Taco, I heard Jobs will be coming out with a new rectal implant phone that shoots fire out your ass when you receive a call. It'll be out in Summer 2010. I promise. You should definitely post this to the front page so you don't get scooped!

We have the opposite problem at my lab. A 500k lb hydraulic press that we use for a few processes is controlled through a PC with a pretty GUI. Errant mouse clicks have twice sent half a million pounds where they shouldn't go. The younger generation is fully comfortable with the computers but has difficulty associating mouse clicks with possible death.

I asked a Korean friend about this - it turns out the fatality was due to interaction with a tracked vehicle. Apparently there was enough force in the getting-run-over process to assplode the cell battery, which is why the medical examiner has said that performing an autopsy will be "difficult". I suppose that one type of crushed organ goo is not readily distinguishable from other types.

I would say that the real difference between Switzerland and the US is the the culture of violence. After all, one would think that thoroughly training people to efficiently kill would increase gun deaths in Switzerland, all other things being equal.
I am not advocating that restrictions on carrying guns around at places like a university be lifted. However, said restrictions don't stop this kind of thing and the Iraq comparison is a stinky red herring that should never have been modded up.
One more note: I was shocked to hear that this was not a white guy (we seem to have a monopoly on psychosis) and am curious to see if his motives are different than previous cases.

  7. They did this in 2003 on Circuit City and the American Dream · · Score: 1

Circuit City laid off all of their best (highest paid) salespeople in 2003 and went to non-commisioned sales. Typical corporate thinking; if it didn't work the first time, you just didn't do enough of it. They also offered lower paid positions at the time, available immediately. Typically these were about 1/3 of current salary. Sorry I can't find a good link, WSJ has a good article if you pay for access.

This would definitely have to be accomplished at thousands of sites.

To remove 1 billion tons of CO2 in a year, you would need to remove about 32 tons/sec. Since CO2 is only about .04% of the atmosphere (and taking into account the sea level densities of air and CO2), one would need to move about 62000 tons/sec of air. Assuming we're talking metric tons, that's about 50 million cubic meters of air every second.

To stay below the speed of sound, the opening into your miracle machine would need to be larger than 14 kilometers in diameter. All of this assumes that you are able to remove 100% of the CO2 passing through your system, so in reality you need to process a lot more air.

Additionally, moving this mass at the speed of sound would take 3.4 Terawatts if your mechanical system was 100% efficient. That's twice the US power production capacity. To slow things down to below hurricane winds (75mph, 33.5m/s) would require a 44 km diameter opening and 35 Gigawatts of power, which is twice the power expected from the Three Gorges Dam in China and about ten times the power of the largest nuclear plant.

is there a way to use a regular projector to turn a pane of glass into a monitor? HUDs have been around for awhile now, and they simply require a proper surface coating to show up nicely.
