IMHO, I would not give the kiddies a laptop until they know a little about how a computer really works. The old Bell Labs CARDIAC "system", a cardboard computer, was really great for this and cheap too. Of course, you don't have to buy this, you can make your own. There are also a large number of software simulators too.
Not to flame, but look at how much time & money have been wasted on civilian space cadets... if it was not for this stuff we could have had a real (1000s of launchers, nuclear armed) ABM system and maybe even a nuclear deterrent in space, ie. real strategic security. Then nobody would dare touch the USA.
IMHO, return control of space to the USN and USAF.
