  1. Re:Good For the Consumer? on New York Times Staff Editorial Promoting Linux · · Score: 1

I agree. I have been using both OS's at home and in a development environment, and have tried switching over to Linux full time at home for all my work. The first time I did this, KDE crashed the whole OS and rebooted into the same freeze every time. Linux is still not NEARLY as complicated, or advanced as Windows is, yet it is already showing signs of eventually becoming as crash prone as Windows. It is the hidden Linux users secret; Linux already has alot of problems and most users know it. Part of the problem is the very diversity and scope of contributors to the various distributions that aid its stability. I LOVE Linux as a server, but would not think of switching again as a desktop untill...at the very least...I can stop KDE from crashing the damn OS! Bill Gates is right about one thing; an OS is alot more than a file system. I would not even dream of trying to convince any of my relatives to swith to linux. I KNOW it would be to hard for them to learn. By the By, since I re-installed Windows XP PRO over two weeks ago, It has yet to crash a single time.

  2. Why are they wasting there time? on MPAA Goes After Its Customers · · Score: 1
Imagine of the government fought the drug war by only going after the drug addicts. A waste of time, no? Think of all the money they are wasting going online, doing searches, tracking down IP addresses, and writing letters. It is clear that the MPAA has absolutely NO CLUE how big the web is and what a futile and usless effort this is.

What is scary is that the ISP's are taking there word that the material is in violation of law. File swapping is not illegal. Is the MPAA willing to take responsibility for mistakes they make by reimbursing the end users for there time and trouble? If your ISP tries that with you and you do not have any illegal software on the server, make them aware of how many customers they have and issue the phrases "Class Action Lawsuit" and "due process" and hope they back off.

I actually don't expect anything less from the MPAA; they will get away with anything they can. If they thought they could come in and do searches in your house, they would. We have to put pressure on the ISP's about there responsibility to there customers, and try to make people less fearful of the almighty MPAA.

Does anyone know if The MPAA has won lawsuits against ISP's for NOT removing material that the MPAA thought was illegal?

    Peace

I cannot believe slashdot readers are so ignorant as to believe this facist B.S. Otherwise sane observant individuals are suckered into buying into this "ohh..we MUST start subscriptions or shutdown cuz its soooo....expensive to operate.." nonsense, at the thought of loosing your precious slashdot.

Didn't you all come here in the first place because it was a place to escape the lies and propagana of a market driven capitalist society bent on selling their collective souls to corporate america on the off chance of belonging to...something? WTF? I put up my first web page with a webtv unit I bought from a neighbor for $25. It was a free site at geocities. It didn't cost me a dime. Even though I have built over 100 websites since then, it is still up. It has never had more than 1 small banner ad. It has actually generated a profit of over a thousand dollars in three years. The maintainance is ZERO.

"Everyone knows that the dice are loaded..." Everybody here knows if they wanted to they could do this for almost nothing. Hardware? My father gave me his old gateway 2000 5 years ago, and I use it as a server now. It runs a site that gets 4000 - 5000 hits a day, on 128 megs of ram and a 75 mhz overdriven 486! Its seven years old and doesn't show any signs of stopping. Don't whine to me about hardware. I just built a rocketship with dual 1 gigs and 3 gigs of ram for $800. Hardware? Sure pal, and don't even think of mentioning the cost of software, with Linux and Open Source around...

Blow me, you cheap facist whiners. You just want us to hold down full time jobs and pay you so you don't have to do anything but sit on you big fat buts and hand out mod points. I work full time, 6 days a week, 12 hours a day. When a days work is finished I answer 20 or so e-mails, return at least 10 phone calls, work on at least two other sites, administer 21 different websites that get a total of 450,000 hits a day, help moderate a newsgroup, and write a column. I do all this on 1 new computer and an old gateway. I haven't spent more than $2000 on all of this in my entire lifetime, and I am usually on the internet using a dial-up modem. I do all this because I love to. Not to make a profit. I work at a real job to pay the rent. Any one can make excuses. The bottom line is you brought together a community of people who thought you were different. You have betrayed us. You are selling out. It is a sad day in /land. I, however, will not follow you to hell. You are on you own. You have taken a bit from the forbidden fruit, and you like the taste. Hope you enjoy the meal. And the COMPANY.

As for the readers, Remember who you are, and what's important. Slashdot is just a website. We can find another. I know it is a hard process. Like looking for a new job. Only worse. But at least you get to keep your soul.

I don't think you can really compare a .net account which may contain credit card numbers, which if compromised, could result in serious financial disasters for those who have them, with a slashdot account whose most personal information you have already freely decided to give.

In fact, as I learned when I started posting here, anything you say here is extreamly likely to show up in a google search with the right keywords. Posting on slashdot is just about the most PUBLIC thing you can do without your own PR firm on retainer. If you don't want your info exposed in every search engine query, use an account with alias information.

Most members of congress don't even have email. How could they know that long before this was even implemented, everyone would know, and either have figured out a way around it, or just decided to use something else?

The only thing they accomplished was to turn PGP into a battlefield for people who don't have anything better to do.

Think of the dissinformation we could send the governments way... "yes, Mr. Director we intercepted the email and It would seem as though Mr. Gates has scheduled the sex-change operation for the 25th..."

Wrong! The entire Microsoft site does not have a single reference to dual booting XP with Linux! Not that we should be suprised by that. I guess their theory is not to admit the competition exists.

In any case, I have a dual boot set up. I was so frustrated by all the irritating boot loader issues that I decided to install XP on my primary hard drive, and Linux on the secondary hard drive, not install a bootloader for Linux at all, and simply boot with the boot floppy(witch has LILO on it). No LILO in the master boot record. No trying to keep LILO in the first 1024 cylinders. I could not be happier with my decision. I thought it would be a pain to always have to use the floppy, but it is nothing. It is also nice to know my MBR is intact! Install XP first though.

I would have to disagree completely with your comment. You have completely ignored one of the most important assets people have in decision making. Other people's opinions. Not that the're always helpfull opinions, but listening to others can serve you in many ways. At the very least he is open to the possibility that others may point out, or bring up, things he has forgotten or taken for granted. It is the bigger man who isn't afraid to ask others. It also shows he cares about the job he does, and is thinking about the future. I would much rather trust the future of one of my departments with someone who uses all resources at his disposal.

Let's face it, the issue are bringing up is more one of appearance than anything else. People appear less competent to subordinates if they are constantly asking others for advice. It is advisible to appear confidant and ready to the people he works with, however, you are taking it to the extream. You also don't sound very helpfull to people to people who are seeking guidance. A VERY important trait in anyone who is in a supervisory position over others. If we were to judge you based on the appearance you give us from your comment...
