a million citizens revolting against their government with hand guns and rifles isn't even going to make a dent
Don't forget the great lesson of the Soviet debacle: all governments ultimately depend on the consent of the people. When that consent is withdrawn, the government collapses.
The great lesson of Romania is that a government shouldn't count on its armed forces to violently suppress their own people.
In a court of law, decisions are handed down in issues that are contended by TWO SIDES. When fourth amendment violators ask the FISA shysters for a rubber stamp of impunity for their crimes, there's nobody to stand up and argue for the constitution.
What I'm not getting is why anyone in Egypt would want to pay for that information. Are they going to build their own carrier and violate somebody's copyright? Are they going to try to attack an American carrier in a rubber raft?
I learned to write C code by writing code, sitting in an office between two experts, one of whom later sat on the original ANSI C committee that defined the standard. I made mistakes, they told me what I did wrong, and I learned. Based on what I've seen from kids coming out of college, their instructors appear to have been people who couldn't make it as software developers.
There is a long, sordid, history of abuses associated with taxi and limousine services, tour buses and so on.
Of course there is. They can do that because government protects them from competition. In a free market, they'd have to clean up their act, or their competition would eat their lunch.
The cops in NYC are a criminal gang that routinely violates citizens' civil rights. The fact that they're still doing this illegal "stop and frisk" bullshit after multiple court rulings against it, proves that they're not there to protect the public, they're just tax collectors and obedience enforcers.
If someone tries to push a bogus charge on your credit card, you call the issuer and dispute the charge, and you also call the cops and file a fraud charge.
they've never faced the prospect of enemy soldiers on their home soil.
Americans have had enemy soldiers on their home soil twice. The first time, they overthrew their king. The second time, the north conquered the south.

That's very bad advice. C++ causes brain damage.

Nothing wrong with being pro-good-government.
TNR has never been in favor of good government. It has always advocated MORE government.

The purpose of this censorship technology is, and has always been, to give government the means to control information in order to deceive the public.

It should have read "government lawyers help spies lie about violating innocent people's privacy rights."

TNR has been a wretched hive of pro-government propaganda since its inception. If it goes belly-up, then good riddance.
-jcr
the state as we know it would become unaffordable and collapse.
Great! How soon could we make that happen?
-jcr
they would have to abolish income tax at the same time.
and what's the downside?

"CoreOS" is the kernel and UNIX services layer of iOS and Mac OS X.

This matches my experience with Uber exactly. The entire reason that the company exists is that cabs in San Francisco suck.

Taxi medallions exist to keep the streets free of excess taxis clogging up the road near attractions
BULLSHIT.
Taxi medallions exist to restrict competition, to the benefit of the cab cartels and the detriment of the public.

diamonds aren't artificially scarce.
This turns out not to be the case. Diamonds are quite plentiful, but DeBeers puts enormous effort into keeping the supply restricted.

You had the compiler to tell you your mistakes. Quit your bitching.

One of my favourite interview questions is "What's your favourite data structure, and why?"
Frankly, that strikes me as a silly question.

If Microsoft, with orders of a magnitude more cash available to burn is finding it almost impossible to break the Android-iOS duopoly
Microsoft is the canonical proof that having piles of cash on hand is no guarantee of success in product development.
