Although not the best DSL provider, they have shapen up in the past few months -- completely revamping all their routers etc, so no its pretty darn reliable.
Anyway, DirectTV DSL is giving me great speeds (1.5/256) with good reliability, a static IP, as well as all ports not being firewalled.
Only downside is their recent caps of bandwith on USENET groups:(
This all reeks of sensationalism and media-based MS-bashing. Whether you like MS or not, MS-bashing is old-hat.
I seem to think the same thing about MS-bashing, but then they do something terribly stupid, like this, and cause bashing to go back up again.
I would agree that it is 'old-hat' but, thats only because MS has been pulling stunts like this for a long time.
Depending on your definition of a 'hacker', your results will vary -- if you mean someone who loves learning how things work, Linux is perfect for those types. Linux simply gives more control to the user, not the other way around. This also gives more control to the admin of the system. With a good admin, you can have a good system, even with malicious users on the machine.
Connecting a Linux box to a network poses no threats unless that network is unsecure. Of course, even secure systems can be broken into, but thats ussually through social engineering or newly found exploits in the target OS.
Seems that the admin fears that hes got an unsecure network, and doesnt know what can/can't hurt it.
The MSN messanger is very aggrivating, it also pretends like it needs to run every time you check your email with outlook express, and doesnt like being ignored on the desktop. If you wanna remove it
edit c:\windows\inf\sysoc.dll find the line that says msmsgs=msgrocm.dll -- remoce "hide" from that line, but leave the commas
save then goto control panel, add/remove programs, then look for windows components, click on it, and it will be one of those in there (cant remember the exact name)

not sure exactly how far away I am, but I know its not close, its on the outer edges, and I am getting a solid 1.5/256
