Sounds like a bunch of sour grapes to me. If you or anyone else thinks they can do better, have at it. Put up or shut up. Sure, there are apps that are better at one thing or another than Blender but is there anything else as complete as Blender that doesn't cost good money? I sure haven't seen it yet.

Gimp is slow on hi-rez images, no doubt. But Photoshop isn't exactly what I would call fast either. You talk about loading a 3000x5000 image. That's nothing. I can load an image ten times that size and paint with a 5000 pixel wide brush in REAL time in FilmFX64. This is all on a P3 800 w/512M. Try that with Photoshop.

Starbucks? Yuck. The only thing they know how to do is over-roast their beans. All of their coffee tastes almost the same (just stronger or weaker but you can't taste the subtleties because they are simply roasted too much). Timothy's is the best of the coffee chains (I buy their beans too sometimes - pretty good, tops of the coffee chains again). At Timothy's there is a distinct and noticable differences in taste and strength of their many blends. I know. I have tried them ALL (yes, I am definitely a coffee freak).
If you want to buy really good beans in Toronto try "The Coffee Tree" on Bloor. They roast all of their beans on site (and will even do a custom roast for you at no extra charge). They aren't cheap though.
