I know you were making a point, but I certainly hope that you CAN'T run Win2K on a 286. That would mean that the distributed Windows 2000 binaries are compiled without 386+ optimizations, which also would mean that Win2K would be optimized for a 8(maybe 16?) bit chip.
Plus, I have Win2K installed on a P133 at work, and it crawls. I'd HATE to see it on a 486, much less a 386 or 286.
I can remember my mom buying the ultra-cheap recycled newspaper pencils for me when I was in High School. Man did those things suck. Not only did they not sharpen well, the graphite would constantly break because the pencils were so flexible -- you could bend a new pencil almost 90 degrees before it would break, but also once they WERE sharpened, the outer layer of the pencil, made of newspaper wouldn't offer enough support for the 'lead', which tended to lead to tip-breaking, and more sharpening.
I don't think this is comparable to lockpicking. Lockpicking requires different actions/technique on each lock.
I think what he was saying is something like "If someone discovered that you could instantly open any Master lock by tapping the combination dial with your knuckle twice, then Master would be at fault for negligence. It shouldn't be illegal for the guy who discovered this fault to publish the information in hopes of exposing weak security."
Anyone know of a motherboard that has more than one AGP slot? Is this technically possible?
I've run win98 with 2 monitors, on and off for over a year now. It's great.
I was first introduced to this on a Mac. We were doing video editing. Work area on one screen, video sample/output on the other. Worked great. And Photoshop multi-head is GREAT. Dump tools and layers, heck, all of you pallettes on the secondary, and use your primary full screen to do editing. Just scroll your mouse off the side of the screen, and it appears on the other.
Now the reason I asked about dual AGP is that multihead gaming sounds interesting, but my secondary card is a piece of crap PCI, card, and I refuse to buy a good PCI video card, with a spare 16 meg Banshee AGP sitting on my desk.
I hate to troll MS like this -- it's kind of cliché on slashdot, but think about their other products.. very few actually 'innovative' ideas.
Windows95 -> System 7
Word -> WordPerfect
Excel -> Lotus 123
Access -> Borland database.. any database software
Explorer -> Netscape + Finder
Outlook -> Lotus Notes
Defrag -> Norton Speed Disk
Drivespace/DiskSpace -> Stacker (didn't they get in trouble over this?)
etc etc etc.
Sorry about the OT post. I'll withold my +1.
And wasn't GWBasic -> Gates, William BASIC ? I thought that's what GW stood for, but I'm likely wrong.
This is my opinion, but I'd MUCH rather have the original CD than an EXACT duplicate of it. You get the label, the liner-art, tray card, etc. And I think that's what she means.
... protect us from the increasing number of criminals, terrorists, child molesters, bigots and dictators...
Last I checked, it wasn't illegal to be a bigot. Not that I do, but if I were to think that, say, french-speaking Saudi's were the algae or society, and I wanted to express my strong dislike or hatred for them, I am free to do so.
BUT, with a system like Carnivore, if I am outspoken about my hypothetical beliefs, I'm sure that under the watchful eye of the FBI, I could become suspect in any criminal case about, for instance, the murder of a french-speaking Saudi.
I know it's a movie, and yes, I think for myself, but the writers of Arlington Road make some good points. They talk about government making moves without all the facts, but with what they think is enough "evidence" to act.
BTW, I'm Canadian. Most of my email is likely routed through the 'States, though.
Ah, but those other 19,999 instances are independently configured, so there's a good chance that the exploit won't exist on all/most/more than one of the instances.
Plus, it might not even be linux running on some/most/all of the instances.
or Windows 2000 on my '286

Stupid tree huggers.
I found a perl based cuecat decoder on freshmeat this is NOT a mirror, but at least it's something.
Example:
Any time I've ever seen a 'live recording' of Third Eye Blind, I've been sorely disapointed. I like their recordings, however.
I know this is ugly, but I'm busy:

Voila. (-: There's prolly a shorter way, but like I said.. busy.
Everyone manipulates figures for their own benefit. Microsoft just does it more then most.
Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Forfty percent of all people know that.

Was your for-poke-next method any faster than PSET?
Quite.
The PSET function called a BIOS routine to do the write. Terribly slow.
Not that mine was THAT fast.. just a lot faster. (-:

Not at all. What I was saying is that almost all Microsoft products are based on other products.
Simple. Don't put words in my mouth.

320*200=64000
I think that this mode was popular because the complete video memory fit into one memory segment. No need for page flipping a-la ModeX.
I still remember the days of bypassing PSET and using my own Pixel Routines in QBASIC.
DEF SEG = &HA000 'the VGA segment
'fill screen with red:
FOR i = 0 TO 64000
POKE i, 4
NEXT
Those were the days. Direct memory access under DOS. Without fear of the BSOD, without fear of infringing on another process' memory... [drool]
Uh, no.

What a great copyright notice, from an artist who actually WANTS people to distribute their music. Somehow it just makes sense.
I wish I had some mod points.
Hey moderators: This post, #170 is HIGHLY deserving of being modded right up to +5.
Sorry for abusing my +1.

The court has said that the FBI has 10 working days to create a timetable for when it would start producing records of how the system works.
Read: 10 working days to get our stories straight.
Surface Mount Technology.
A special PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design that affects how components are placed on the board.

Microsoft SHOULD buy back their shares of Xenix, and run freeBSD on that.
I'm an idiot. I meant to say run HOTMAIL on that, not FreeBSD. My mind gets numb at 5pm.
Microsoft SHOULD buy back their shares of Xenix, and run freeBSD on that.
[snicker]
Or they could mix it with Windows 2003 (Code named WinOSX) and then build a special API called.. Saqua to beef up their GUI.
Either way, buying back Xenix would be a great move for MS. (-:
Not if you pay the insurance.
What's that you say? You have to pay EXTRA so that they won't bend, break, batter, tear, burn or soak your package?
a similar service run on an MS.net thingy where the only protection is their word.
... and we all know how reliable MS Word is. (-:
Sorry. Bad joke.
No it's not. The boxes map to multiple characters.
Symantecs symantecs (-:
My point was that there are many ways to interpret a file. Binary data can be expressed in numerous ways.
If I load an mp3 into a hex editor, I get this:
+

Now, say to print each ASCII byte onto a t-shirt, and wear that t-shirt in public, would that be considered distribution?
I mean, after all, it IS possible to turn what I'm wearing into something that you can listen to.
