This is all good, but why does Jon Katz try to wrap the "technology" name around articles that don't have a "clear" reason to have technology attached to them?
I think this may be the flaw of Jon's that makes him so hated.
If he'd stop trying to tie technology into everything he writes (because he doesn't have a firm grip on the subject; the audience does, hence the hatred), he'd be a much better writer.
What if all the developers are script kiddies attempting to download pr0n/warez/mp3s while at work? SOE standardizing their desktops will stop that. Some employers would rather do this than confrontation. I say go with it!
If you can't do your job, then your company suffers. Just don't try to take the system by yourself, else you'll find yourself without a job (don't forget to check the economy, because it is bad).
This is in regards to the non-closed Italics Tag which will probably be fixed by the time most moderators read this.
CmdrTaco recently spoke about making a slashdot pay site for readers that don't want to be spammed with ads. I must ask, what are we getting for our money?
I'd suggest that if you intend on people paying for it you start spell/grammar check articles to be posted, and check your tags
Something as simple as an Italics flag not being terminated (which should be in the code, because extra terminating flags don't hurt a thing) definately discourages anyone from paying for slashdot.
If I am going to pay you for your services, then I'd expect you to do more than click a button all day saying "this article is in" and "this article isn't."

Shouldn't there be an "Open Source" topic in slashdot?
This article really shows the need for one.
I wouldn't call this "Linux Business" (but it is probably the best topic from what's available).
And how many hours do you suspect until Mozilla has an option to "announce browser to be IE"?
Any way that MS tries to force you to be one browser is futile, because you can just imitate it with another browser.
Slashdot has editors, right?
/. system closes it for you. Why can't the articles borrow the same code?
What, per say, do these people do?
BTW - the italics tag STILL hasn't been closed.
Try making a comment w/o a closing italics flag. The
Sure, but I'm not asking you to pay for my bad grammar.
If you paid for it, you'd have a good reason to gripe.

What if you lived in a poor neighborhood and your son wants to be a web developer.
You can't pay for it, so do you tell him to go spend a year as a gang banger in the hopes that this organization will grab him?
How about we train aspiring poor children instead of gangbangers?
gang-banger-ese (I'm reading this: ebonics)?
Aren't you being a bit bigotous?
The last thing these evil children need are bigots like you!
Another thing,
Knowing these children's past, who would be willing to hire them??
In this economy??
Lets face it, the world is cruel, and once you've gone evil, its impossible to start a new life again.

The actual sites they've created; are they worth while?
I'm up for teaching our evil children things to bring them back into the world, but is it just helping them be evil again???
