    A common practice I've seen is the fear of going opensource because if something breaks they have nobody to blaim.

    If win2k dies and formats your HD for no reason, you can at least call up support.. and bitch.
    And tell your boss MS did it.

    If your linux machine explodes, the guy who installed it (or decided to go with linux in the first place) gets the blaim.

    blaim takes precedent over cost :)

    I've known about this since like 8months ago. And it's a shame Windows.Forms class libs aren't portable... it's an EXCELLENT alternative to MFCs for make win32 GUI apps. Very easy to use like Java Swing.

    I hope mono is able to port it eventually.

    Geezuz :)

    All in all, it seems to me that a good analogy would be to compare microkernel Vs Monolithic(linux) kernel, to linear vs Object Oriented Program.

    On the one hand, linear does the job.. and is very fast. On the other you have a highly modular, conceptually prettier design.

    Ok so it's not an exact analogy:) But couldn't you compare loading and unloading kernel modules on the fly to a microkernel like feature of modifying the core OS without having to reboot?

    (I'm aware that linux kernel modules still don't run in "user space").

    P.S. Darwin runs not so speedy, and I won't even get into how hugely resource hungry Aqua is (which is not the kernels fault).

    For me to take in the relevance of his "requests per/sec" scores.. I would really like to know what was the command line he used with "ab" (apache bench).

    Such as home many requests he tried? what concurrency ? etc...

    Sorry to break this to you, but regular DVD format (mpeg-2) also uses compression :)

    From the sound of the post, it I figured it was at least a few grand :)

    This isn't exactly the biggest scam in the universe, a drop in the bucket in-terms of the amount of money swindled in other Ebay or PayPal related transactions. (if you can even call it a transaction).

    I don't get it... sure I have no problem with banning Nazi, white-power, and various other hate sites.

    But what in blazes is wrong with anti-abortion sites? I mean pro-abortion seems just as contraversial to me.

    Unless these websites are talking about killing certain Abortion Doctors (which most anti-abortion activists would never dream of doing). I don't see the problem here.

    Might as well ban any website with an opinion, Anti-Bush , PRO-India... yatta yattaa..

    If SETI can get 100s of thousands of people do lend cpu cycles, and folding@home (which is MUCH more obscure than SETI) can get 30k people.

    Then this phenomina should really be looked at by marketing people. It's amazing they can start a project, and just assume people will want to download their little client to use up cpu power ala screen saver.

    What drives you people to use these clients? Why bother? And don't tell me it's cuz you want to do your part to find aliens :)

    So they keep buying harddrives? Seems a little excessive. It's not enough to have a backup written to the same HD every week.

    My work backs up to tape every week, and sends it offsite. Why? what if a database was corrupted all this week, but we didn;t find out till the following week? if I don't keep old backups... I've just fucked myself.

    I think this idea is ok, but frankly I like the mouse :)

    One of the things that makes window managers slow , and ugly IMO is XFree86 behind it. Ever wonder why the latest KDE/Distro runs slow on a 400mhz PC ?

    Well yes it;s KDE's fault.. but XFree86 using it's "network" everytime you start an app doesn't help either. For the true desktop *nix user we need a nice, pretty, speedy alternative to XFree86 I think.

    And not Aqua, because that also runs horribly slow on anything less than 600mhz.

    I hate to say it, but lately it's becoming more and more obvious that Intel is no longer really interested in performance. They'll squeeze a bit more out of an ancient architecture and add a few buz words like "SSE2", so they can slap on a hefty price-tag.

    Look at the pentium4 design! Intel would much rather use a dated cpu, with a nice pretty GHZ rating than keep the same MHZ and improve the architecture design.

    Do you really think investers give a shit about registers?

    I don't see how you can begin to compare this security problem to the hole in ssh/ssl.

    You see in those cases it's a standard unchecked buffer problem, which is exploitable.

    In this case a virus was deliberatly planted in a distro of some OSS. This is a much much bigger deal.

    Actually yes,, the .NET VM for client side gui apps are much faster than java Swing. Dunno why it just is. Guess MS realises that MFCs suck, so they better make .NET GFX worthwhile. --Etan

    It doesn't disrespect java.. it just puts java in it's place. Java is a terrific server side , and web-based, and distributed OO language. (hense j2ee being the topic) As far as speed client GUIs go, java swing sucks goat nuts. Dunno why.. it just does. if I were to right a client side app (in windows), I'd go for .NET / C#. It's as easy as swing... and much much faster and cleaner. --noodles
