  1. Re:Everything you could ever want to know about Du on AMD Announces "Duron" Processor · · Score: 1

    > The Thunderbird is just like the Duron only with 256K of exclusive L2 cache, giving it a total effective cache size of 384K.

Does this mean that AMD will make only the Thunderbird, and bin parts--high yield cache becomes "Athlon" and low yield cache becomes "Duron"?

  2. Re:Please read Skala's Web page on Cphack, the GPL, And So Much More · · Score: 1
In part because of Skala's signing of rights to Mattel (and absence of licensing of rights via GPL), I think the program and the paper describing the encryption will be successfully deep-sixed. There will of course always be a handful of 31337 cracking sites that have them, but they will, by and large, be dead and buried!

The only hope for this political issue to continue is for one of the websites that is improperly blocked by the censorware to sue Mattel for defamation (e.g., blocked as pornographic site) or false advertising. Could be a class action suit.

Otherwise, just let the issue drop and go home...

But you cannot then take Sally's code and release it in your closed product...unless Sally gives you permission.

This is what the previous comment meant.

Clearly a "style" can't be copyrighted. Even Elvis complains to me that he doesn't get royalties on all the imitators out there.

  7. Everywhere/nowhere is the center of the universe on Galileo's Daughter · · Score: 1

From my rather weak understanding of the inflationary universe theory, the universe everywhere is expanding. This means that everywhere (or nowhere) is the center of the universe. This is naturally rather confusing and difficult to envision. I think it means that space itself is getting bigger, so eventually commutes are going to get longer :)

  8. Secret project? on Interview: Ask Alan Cox · · Score: 4

Some time ago you mentioned on your diary that work was 10% complete on the secret project. What is the secret project? Or when can we know about it?

  9. CIVA/Rosetta on Europe plans comet landing · · Score: 2

The part of the mission I am familiar with is CIVA. This is an instrument on the lander (ROLAND I think) that has an infrared imager and a visible imager (the orbiter also has imagers). The imagers will be used to do spectroscopy on core samples of the comet: the lander will drill a sample from the comet, then illuminate it with light of different wavelength, and image it. This should give spatial information and chemical composition.

Of course, this assumes the spacecraft launches safely, rendezvous with the comet safely, lands safely, the instruments work, the radios work...

  11. Complainers and Doers on SETI@home having Problems · · Score: 1

    >In all things there are complainers and there are doers.

Right on! If these damn complainers would start doing instead of complaining... But all they do is bitch and moan. Complain, complain, complain. What is it with them? Nothing better to do with their time? I mean, are they just sitting at the computer during school/work hours with nothing better to do than read /. and complain about some perceived problem? Get a life! Grow up! You don't see me sitting here bitching all day do you? NO! I'm far too busy complai^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hdoing real work!!!
