Record created 01-Oct-98? Have they really been planning on naming the ship "itanium" for ONE YEAR? You would have thought that they would have been able to come up with a better name in a *year's* time. Or at least though better of it...

    Ack.

  2. Re:When will they be cheaper? on New DNS Agreement Announcement · · Score: 1

Forget cheaper. I think domains should cost $1000 per year. Reduce the load on the root servers. Put an end to squating. Use the extra $990 to fund free internet service to schools and libraries and get the FCC tax off my phone bill.

  3. Want Warp 5? Get Warp UP! on Death Knell for OS/2 Client · · Score: 2

My company still uses OS/2 on some servers. Why? Because it works. It does the job. It never (NEVER) crashes. And its DOS compatability is excellent (if you have any stupid DOS programs that you ever need to use, you should be using OS/2).

I had the assignment of upgrading all of these servers for Y2K, and I was dreading downloading all of the fixpacks and doing the painful installs (I remember fixpacks from the 2.1 days, and they were often PAINFUL!). Then I found out about the Warp UP CD from Indelible Blue, Inc. This single disk contained all of the latest fixpacks for OS/2 and its components (like MPTN and TCP/IP), plus updates to runtime DLLs (like VX-Rexx and EMX 0.9d) and software like Netscape 4.6. All with a easy to use GUI interface.

Sorry for the testimonial, here, but this product saved me days of works. If you use OS/2, get it! I want Warp 5 as much as the next guy, but I think that getting all of the updates in one place is as good as it gets (until IBM gets its head out of its ass).

I just guessed two usernames and passwords, (sorry, Mr. Smith numbers 83 and 84, whoever you are), put them both on vacation mode, and sent a message from one to the other. No loop.

But, I already received some spam at both accounts. Some spammer has already written a script to generate lastname### address and flood their server. I hate spam, but this is kind of funny.

I wonder how much disk space they have?

Whatever happens, keep in mind that our experiences in Florida over the next 48 hours are not meant to be a form of cheap entertainment for slashdotters.

Apparently, the people who set up the webcam (also Florida residents) disagree with you. I do too.

Come on, you whiners! The humor icon *is* appropriate. I don't think this is funny because of the impending death and destruction. I think this is funny because these geeks, while packing up their stuff and evacuating their house, stopped to aim the web cam out the window and make sure the computers were well protected.

And when I stop to think about it, I have to admit that I would do the same. Wouldn't you?

Computers do not become obsolete in 18 months. The Pentium-166s with 32M that I bought 2 years ago are still humming along nicely, thank you. So I can't play System Shock II on them, fine, but that's hardly obsolete... I can still do 99% of my daily work on them.

And I've got a wall full of 486's that I couldn't live without.

Obsolete, my ass. Who writes this stuff? Old computers never die, they just become routers and servers and things...
