  1. Replay 4500 is also a Linux based PVR on DishPVR 721 Review · · Score: 3, Informative
"TiVo's not the only Linux based PVR in the US market anymore..."

According to this Sonicblue's Replay 4500 is also Linux based.

  3. Slow searches on Kartoo Search Engine Presents Results as a Map · · Score: 1

While the graphical map of results is nice, the length of time a search takes is unacceptable. If this is a result of a /. effect, then it needs better hosting, hardware, etc before it can expect to be taken seriously.

  4. From the article on An Offer Tivo Owners Can't Refuse · · Score: 1

"Reaction varies from mild surprise to outright rage, with TiVo representatives saying that they're taking note of everyone's reaction, but the company has also said that it will be doing the same thing again soon."

Great, so no matter how loud the complaints are, TiVo plans to record more shows without permission. This sounds like a scary way to boost network ratings. Apparently your vote is now for sale to the highest bidder, whether you were watching the show or not.

  7. Free Software *does* stand to benefit on Free Software at Risk Under Lemon law · · Score: 1
A consumer has a choice when buying a product. Either he can choose to roll out software which is available at no cost (or at very little from the charge resulting with distribution), or he can spend thousands of dollars on an expensive solution from a corporation receiving millions of dollars in software sales. Even if a law is implemented, the odds of a suing an individual or small shop with very little money are less than a closed source shop with positive cashflow for two simple reasons:

    1) The negative PR generated by suing an individual or small group could only hurt the plaintiff's own revenue.
    2) The amount of damages a company would recover from the open source shop would not be worth the effort involved in suing them.

So in the end, Free and Open Source sof tware will come out the winner.

  8. They didn't have much of a business plan on RealNames CEO Talks Back · · Score: 4, Insightful

If he truly believed his product was ground-breaking cutting-edge technology, he should have partnered with other companies as well. Depending on Microsoft as your only partner does not make good business sense. Had he made deals with other vendors, RealNames would have some source of capital to fall back on. But since he suicided by depending on Microsoft, his company is now no more.

"For instance, IE users who type "RealNames" into their address bars are automatically taken to RealNames' Web site at www.realnames.com."

That is pure genius. Next thing you know we will have the ability to visit webpages by typing in a "URL" into the address bar.

  10. Their product is only a front end on Standard C++ Moves Beyond Vapor · · Score: 1
An interesting point on this page:

"The product Edison sells is basically just the front end. Someone needs to add a code generator, libraries, support tools, etc. to produce a complete compiler package."

So while it is worth applauding a product which can handle the entire language, their work is not complete by any means. I sincerely hope they can produce the additional utilities that would make it worth implementing on. It is certainly promising.

  12. We need Stallman on The Stallman Factor · · Score: 5, Insightful

No matter how controversial, the community needs RMS. Where Linus has openly admitted Linux is not the most important part of his life, RMS remains the prophet while Linus settles down with family life. Stallman is the perfect example of a person who is unwavering in his beliefs that all software should be free - to the point where some believe he defies common sense (e.g. coders should work as waiters to pay their bills). But he is genuinely passionate about open source, and for that we can all learn something from him. I know I am not looking forward to the day RMS is unable to continue his mission with the open source movement.

(2015) The Microsoft antitrust case comes to an end. To the surprise of many, the proposed settlement is rejected. Microsoft is ruled guilty of illegally exploiting its monopoly to expand into other markets. In terms of remedies, Microsoft is therefore forced to make sure everyone has fair access to their monopolist software. They are required to allow every person buying a new computer to receive a pre-loaded copy of Windows XP, Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Bob for Windows. (In negotiations, the DOJ later agreed that Microsoft may charge OEMs a small US$500 "distribution fee" per product to cover expenses.) Furthermore, Microsoft's janitor is authorized by the court to tell Bill Gates that he's an asshole whenever he thinks management tries to take further illegal steps to dominate the market.
