If Lycoris has crappy spending habits compared to their income, yes, they'll go out of business. Ditto for redhat, any other linux distro. When these companies marked "desktop useability" they moreso mean on the -Corporate- desktop. Thats where their real dollars are. (in _SUPPORT_ contracts) As long as the support contracts vary enough from distro to distro, you can expect them to be hyping desktop-usability to corporate clients for a long time. 12. SCSI TROLLS: READ THIS on Serial ATA Technology Explained · · Score: 4, Interesting
For all of you waxing locquatious on the merits of scsi....please read the article, noticeably:
SCSI drives are notorious for their noise, heat and vibration levels. These low points are not acceptable at the consumer level. Noise and heat don't matter too much in huge server rooms, but they can quickly become a problem in desktops. Unfortunately, this means that the extremely low seek times and high spindle speeds that make SCSI drives so fast are not available in consumer market. Basically until cooler, quieter, smoother drives can be manufactured in high volume, desktop hard drives will continue to make baby steps in speed.

For the time being, IDE isn't going anywhere.
NOISE & HEAT will tend to outweigh (relatively) minor performance gains in consumer systems. (Enterprise hardware is another matter entirely)
sigh....we need to start using those annoying javascripts that make people read the article BEFORE posting.

My goal was actually to be FUNNY. The statement made was this is the "CLASSIC" case of the tragedy of the commons. My only statement was that the "CLASSIC" (or Canonical) case of the "Tragedy of the Commons" involves cows in England, not CD's in the USA.

  18. Tragedy of the Commons on Latest Salvos in the Ongoing Battle Of Webcasting · · Score: 4, Insightful

Actually, the Classic case of the Tragedy of the Commons follows:

I am a cow or sheep farmer.
I may use the commons to graze my animal.
The commons may only support N animals.
    There are P farmers.
Therefore, I may safely graze N/P animals without damaging the commons, like all other farmers.
There is NO incentive for me to not damage the commons, since I can profit extra by adding an extra cow.
Rinse, Lather, Repeat for each individual farmer.
This easily, _without_ a second iteration, produces NP+P cows, NP+P > NP, so the commons goes to ruin.

Having said this, can someone please show me how in the hell _not having obscene webcasting rates_ is a tragedy of the commons?
Webcasting may or may not have an economic impact on artists (*cough record companies cough*) and I make NO STATEMENT regarding that as I have absolutely no statistics and am completely unqualified to do so -- HOWEVER -- I am intelligent, rational, and quite capable of pointing out that the situation does NOT closely resemble the Tragedy of the Commons. (Music is a non-depletable good. Unlike an apple or a blade of grass -- comestibles and other consumables -- if one person listens to music, it can be listened to by another. The tragedy of the commons only applies to PUBLIC ACCESS goods which are CONSUMABLE)
