I go to North Carolina Stat university, and just last week the university signed up all csc students (at least) for the MSDN Academic Alliance, which provides all Microsoft OSs as well as Visual Studio Pro 6.0 for free download. I imagine the department paid for this at a relatively cheap price, and MS got more money from the department that it ever would have from students who individually buy MS sw.

It isn't very fun writing a bunch of dialogs, windows, buttons and such to make a nice configuration for a program.

It still might not be fun in OSX, but making interfaces is very easy because of the included dev tools and the cocoa application model.

A programmer of marginal skill can literally drag together a standard compliant UI in 5 minutes and have it work.

It's a little bit more than a lazy programmer issue. A rich, standardized library of Cocoa classes and dev tools that almost force oyu to do things "the right way" also contribute to better front ends on osx -- lets not forget the fact that the userbase probaly would not use an app alot if it didnt have a good interface.

sorenson is a codec that interfaces with quicktime via a plugin scheme. there is nothing in quicktime that says a damn thing about sorenson. assuming you had a perfect port of quicktime, you couldnt play sorenson encoded video without a lunix port of the sorenson codec, or windows libraries that would allow sorenson to think its running on windows, or something that can decode a sorenson bitstream.
