: Why not push ReiserFS, XFS, etc? It seems that

: with ext3?
Bzz. Try again. XFS is extremely well proven.
It's been in use for years in systems with massive storage - nuclear war simulations, automobile designing, and the area I've been dealing with the last several years, weather forecasting.
Why Linus chose ext3 over the more proven technology, XFS? I have been using XFS in linux on my laptop, and it is rock solid, stable, and fast. It's a proven filesystem.
I expect ext3 to have major bugs once people start using it in production. People will be really pissed when their data becomes corrupted/deleted and could cause even more instability in the kernel.
On another, only slightly related note, I hate the fact that ALSA isn't standard in the kernel - instead they use OSS.. which releases only half-assed free drivers, then expects you to pay for the good drivers.
But I guess when you're the dictator of an operating system you can do with it whatever you like.
I loved wolfenstein 3d - it was the first computer game I ever really played. I spent hours totally immersed - the sounds, the german, everything made it a totally great game.
I did cheat slightly though - I could tell if there were a lot of guys in the room ahead before I opened the door. If I walked up to a door (before opening it), my hard drive would grind and the LED light would flash like crazy if there were germans in the room ahead.
This version though doesn't seem to be as groundbreaking or entertaining as most other games currently on the market. Quake 3 took the first person shooter as far as it could go. I think that genre has perhaps reached it's peak.
I think there are some really great games out right now. Games like starcraft, the sims, rollar coaster tycoon and nhl2001 are some of my personal favorites.
I just wish more of those bastard software developers would port their software to linux and/or solaris so I wouldn't have to reboot as much:-)

Visual effects, action, and comedy have been the hallmarks of star wars: the story and acting has always taken a backseat..
