As an aside to this thread, can anyone recommend a terminal emulator that will emulate the linux console (i.e. F1-10, etc) so when I telnet into my linux boxen from win95/98 I can better enjoy the experience (and X is out of the question as is VNC).
My problem w/ X is the size, it would be nice to have the same code (or a subset) of it running on my pda and on my desktop and to be able to share apps, etc.
You'all should look at the white page on the QNX photon gui. Really small and allows neat stuff like dragging an app from one system to another and have it still run.
The downside is that it is not anyway near open source. It would also need an Xlayer to be backwards compatable but if you presented an Xlayer as a module that was used w/ old code and no Xlayer w/ new code neat things might happen.
My biggest gripe is that it seems that _nobody_ cares about performance much anymore (just buy fast hardware/network or more memory is not caring).
OK, I'm old (43), problem is I didn't grow up till just a few years ago... I didn't have kids (singular at this point) till 1.5 yrs ago and glad I waited. (But my son is really, really cool, has his own laptop and everything). I know that soon I'll have problems since lots of other programmers my age and younger have given up on pushing the envelope.
Hell, I have somewhere around 10 systems at home, start dabbling on my stuff when the kid goes to sleep (which is thankfully at 8:00pm), read lots, still watch cartoons (Batman Beyond, etc) but have a life. I can crank out code when I have to and enjoy doing that.
It's not easy and I don't expect it to be, I spend a lot of time reading but not just SciFi and Tech stuff. I also have other hobbies that keep the brain going so I don't burnout on one area.
I can see doing this for the next 20yrs since the first 20 were so interesting, but I don't know if I'll find anyone who'll hire me when I'm 62.
I just don't fit into management and that's where people say to go. I can't, they wear shoes.
I got the X10 Cam (xcam) and it's not very good. Very bad low light capabilities. Some interesting color artifacts in too much light. However it is real small and the wireless stuff works pretty well.
>But there is no way I'm going to pay $25 a panorama to publish VRs on the Web.
This is what amazes me about IPIX, they actually have people duped into buying the development kit and then having to pay for each pic you put up. Sorta like a compilier company charging for each app you build or a web company charging for each page you put up, that's scary big time.

OK, I didn't see it yet but who buried the film, etc and why didn't the people who found the film meet the same fate?

I guess I'll have to go into marketing.
