If this is going to reduce the costs of space travel considerably, it could have a bright future. Considering the fact that it is very expensive to pull up cargo with conventional spacecraft this could be a breakthrough for wide commerical exploitation of space.
boss tells you to put windows 2000 on the NT 3.51 server without buying any new hardware
First you warn him it won't work. Then, you do it (with much hassle and previsible troubles) and then resign from your job and leave them in the shit. That should learn them to listen to their techs. Nope, I don't have job ethics, I know.
(Oh, and Germans never laugh...only when drunk and then you don't want to be around.)
You are probably right, but those other machines are probably the predecessors of the "newer" ones. Let's check this: it means that the current PC is a today generation PC. Since most people don't upgrade much, from my experience I can tell they skip about two generations of CPU's. So, let's say a family has one top notch P-IV with 256Meg (hey, that is a consumer PC nowadays), this means the one before is a P-II with 64Meg RAM and the little one is a P-I with 32Meg RAM. You are in *no* way going to put XP on any of those two "older" PC's. They probably aren't even networked. Sorry, the XP rebate will only profit people who buy 3 top notch PC's and they they won't care much about 10$ rebate per PC.
They just had to block slashdot: that way you avoid links to goatse.cx and there woudn't be all this awful talk about "Your Rights Online" and "Anti-Censorship".
They do like the cute pengiun however.
If a company in San Francisco wants to work with a company in New York, there aren't many barriers to them doing that.
Oh, come on! You know very well that those Califorinians are thinking of surfing and "california babes" the whole day! They don't work, but driver around in their VW minibusses with their surfboard packed on it.
New Yorkers on the other hand are constantly jabbering with their stockbrokers over their cellphones and yelling at cabs.
I would call those "barriers"! I thought *everybody* knew that!
Here we go for another Java/C++/C# flamewar added with a spicy argument on how the Unix philosophy is small programs acting toghether. Don't read on you'll only find:
Java Rulez, yippie
C++ Rockz and Java is bloated and slow!
Real programmers code directly in hex anyway
C# is the future....Get assimilated!!!!
Unix simplicity over all
The windoze API allows much more than you damn wimps with awk and grep!
I'm all for it, as long as it advanced mankind.

Yes, and when they install it they realise that their PC has become obsolete by installing a newer OS. Oh, bugger! :-/

...the Fifth Element: It' GREEN!!!
Not only that but half of the capacity of my harddisk seems suddenly to have become illegal :-(

The only way you can get that is: code it yourself, debug it yourself and test it yourself. Then release and await praise.
No, I don't do that either....

Give them credit: They did invert Clippy, that was an astounding innovation!
...I do already fly...I don't even need a car/plane! Where is my bong?
I have to see that for myself first...
