What's wrong with the world is this: People who use flawed logic trying to disprove points. Example, There were no industrialized countries in pre-historic times therefore the iceage was not caused by man therefore global warming does not come from man it's just nature.
How does this make any logical sense?
What proponents of global warming say is this: Overall there is a warming trend OUTSIDE the the normal earth cycle which we have tried to understand via geological records. THEY KNOW THAT THE EARTH HAS CYCLES.
What do you have against scientists?
What's so exciting about a language neutral "Way" to run server side code? Are you by change refering to mod_asp or something? [insert personal attack here]
While I do know what you are getting at, you should probably be more specfic. "the future of web programming" should probably be changed to "the future of professional web programming". It seems nit-picky but I never want to disuade hobbiest from making some neat interactivity on their site by forcing them to do mod_perl, CF, PHP or some other more complex method of server side programming.
Additionaly : ) CGI as a protocol is not outdated. It is inflexable, inefficent and some other adjectives but it still fills it's role nicely.
I can't believe you're actually recommending ASP in lieu of cgi/perl. If he wants to do a perl guestbook, chances are he's not on NT anyway. I really don't want to start a NT vs Unix thing but ASP???!? Gasp shock etc etc
Excluding language goals, both can be equally powerful server side programing languages. It really boils down to matter of personal taste if the programmer is sufficiently skilled. If you like PHP that's cool and nice but don't claim ASP is a better alternative!!! ICK ICK ICK
For most sites, plain old cgi works JUST fine. If the fellow wants to do a guestbook I'd say it's a personal low-traffic site, in which case perl/cgi works just fine. Proffesional sites should always be done in mod_perl.
First I'm wondering what this has to do with the book review... : )
Second, If you have problems going from x86 to sparc with perl, you're a poor perl programmer, if that's the case stick to something you (quite obviously) are more familiar and happy with: Java.
Don't spread your FUD about a great programming language though.
The term "white hat" refers to the fact that he alerted the web site rather than posting horrible stories about a stock then buying loads of the artifically deflated stock.
Lots of people can crack servers if they wanted to. That doesn't make them black-hats.
I second that. I can just see HOW cnn and msnbc picks this up "ACKk!!! patch your IE against html!!" it's just plain silly. This is the first thing any server orient web programmer should learn and if they don't know this they aren't worth the carbon in their butt.
I was wondering that the other day, perhaps when something utterly bad happens a few "curses" come out but I was under the impression that the general populace (of america) thinks "swear words" are bad? I think it's funny we make up words that are "Bad" so we can express extreme emotion and THEN bring those supposedly low use words into common vocabulary as people become sensitised to them.
To be a bit more on topic flaming follows a similar usage curve, don't you think? In the olden days, flaming was actually looked on as bad etquite (sorry about speeling) but now it's the accepted mean of disagreement...
As someone mentioned before, flaming is the lowest common denominator form of debate. If being in the lowestest common denominator group is fine with you that flame on!
The art of debate is one not practiced enough and society suffers for it.
Something occured to me about the issue of "invasion of privacy" and cookies... If you go to a site, you're submitting a REQUEST for THEIR content correct? Well don't they have a right to give you whatever the heck they want? Their server, their money. A LARGE portion of internet sites would not be around if it was not for targeted banner ads. If you turn off cookies or reject those from the ad house, you're in a small way, abusing the web site IMHO.
Furthermore, this database of abacuse already existsed, doubleclick didn't make it. You've already lost your privicy. By living in a capitalistic society you've chosen that route already. Stop whining! If people abuse that information, like many fear, THEN whine. Targetted ads is NOT abuse. Puulleeaze!:)
I don't understand people like you. I can just as easily embed hidden form fields in all the pages I care to. Pass around UID's on urls. Cookies are simply ANOTHER way to do it. The only difference being that they remain between browser sessions when instructed. Do you use your grocery store discount card? Same thing. Do you fill out free magazine subscrition forms? Same thing. Do you fill out product registration forms? Same things. Get over it. There is nothing wrong with the use of cookies.

it (B) looked tacky and busy to me ; ) so i think we should stick to internals, standards, and politics : )

Right on! :)
I easily make my fees to the accountant up in what he saved me last year, and I bought a new pc
If it's not that big of an expense, just fork out the money. But find a good one first, that's the important bit.
