  1. Damn you Americans and your evil hoards of lawyers on Tech Industry To Hollywood: Slow Down, Camper · · Score: 1

I am constantly infuriate d by the stupid laws your corrupt politicians pass. Why? Because the size of the US market means that any law passed by congress regarding copyright and digital protection in hardware will mean that virtually all hardware made anywhere will have to conform to those standards, and no one will make machines that will still allow fair use for those of us elsewhere in the world. The EU seems to be trying to stand up for its citizens rights in the face of big media, but even if it prevails we will still suffer much of the fall out from your leaders capitulation to the recording industry bucks

  2. Re:Simply put youre dead wrong on WinInformant Says Windows More Secure Than Linux · · Score: 1

If you're into shooting fish in a barrel, you'll aim at the big fish. Slightly different point, I'm a totally green linux user. I installed it once an got totally lost. The default installation must have been frighteningly insecure, as bad, if not worse than a default Win2k one. But at least M$ included a method to guide and encourage novice users to keep their system more or less up to date via Windows Update. If I had stuck with Linux i'd have been a menace to the internet.

Actually I suspect that OpenViagra might be a good step forward, and a damn sight safer too (or least it will be by the time it has killed a few dozen people and all the bugs have been fixed by the wealth of Biochemistry PhD's who'd donate their time FOC)

  5. TI rescued my degree! on Texas Instruments Announces New Calculator · · Score: 1

I love TI calculators. I recall one evening before a math resit exam cramming the contents of the manual for my new calculator into my head rather than my course notes. Time well spent as it turned out.

On a slighly different note, how will schools and colleges cope when all calculators come with wireless networking built in as the line between calculator an palm PC blurs, and how will kids react when told to clear the memory of their digital address book before an exam?

  6. What if...... on Economic Slump hits Open Source · · Score: 1

What if all software was open source? Who would pay a humble softie to ply his trade? Only those companies who wanted software to do a specific job that hadn't been done before, and was not core to their business. Where would the motivation for a company to produce something better than their competitors come from if their competitor could then distribute your software with their product?

What about software for software's own sake like games and word processors. OK so you want people to write OSS in their spare time, but where would they develop their skills in the first place, and what about those people who actually have a life beyond the PC desk?

OSS taken to its conclusion goes against the basic driving force of mankind since the we ceased to be a species of subsistance farmers when people realised that you don't have to grow your own food because you can pay someone to do it for you, if they then pay you to do something else. Like it or not hard cash is the means of exchange we currently choose to fairly compensate people for a fair days work.
