  1. good to see someone take a second look on Sometimes, Microsoft is Right... · · Score: 1

It's good to see someone give some objective critisism on articles posted on slashdot. I see alot of posts claiming that slashdot is nearly enquirer like in it's flamebate headlines, which is true sometimes, however I've never seen an article like that that didn't get either ripped in the comments section completely destroying it's credibility, (you wouldn't see that in normal print newspaper), or even better still a follow up post like this where someone presents an antithesis. The truth is not some holy omnipotent being penning words of wisdom that canot be refuted because of it's innate rightness, it's having the right and the ability to comment and debate. I would argue that it is nearly impossible for libel to happen on slashdot for the reason that any parties who care enough to set the record straight have the ability to do so, and then a reader can make an intelligent decission on what the truth is. We are after all capable of free thought. RMS might be a good example here. I've never seen anyone who gets as many words thrown into his mouth, or at the very least talked about and critisized as much as he does, however love him, hate him, he takes great pains to be unwaivering on his resolve about things and his intended goals. When there is question about such things, he usually trys to set the record straight. I'm sure I'm going to get blasted for this last RMS comment, like I said, mere mention of his name seems to spawn controversy. I admire his ability to weather it.

ummmm, no usually they are ahead of the other distro's, ie as soon as it comes out it's in the distro. Oh wait, you must have been using the sissy stable version of debian. get a clue and use woody. That being said it really doesn't matter where the hell they keep ssl/ssh and all that stuff. I use them on my machine all the time and I typed in apt-get install ssh so on and so forth to get them so what's the big deal. They want to restructure the layout internally, doesn't affect me a bit.

Windows never was a stable and consistent development platform, what are they complaining about?

  4. Re:Using Linux on RTCW Single Player Demo & Linux Binaries · · Score: 1

you can install the windows castle wolfenstein CD on a linux box with wine. In fact I can play the game with full accelleration under wine. Only down side is occasional pop in the sound, but otherwise wine runs the game fine. Now that the linux single player version is out I don't have to use wine anymore.

Maybe you didn't set it up right? I run a GF2 mx 400 and all the games I have run flawlessly, not to mention all the loki demos I don't own.

  7. Why not use Open Office on MS Office for OSX? Why not for Unix as Well? · · Score: 1

I think the question of MS office is largely moot. Open office run's on unix natively, (well at least as natively as having it's own API to cross the bridge between X and Windows). It reads all the MS formats, has a killer interface, and is completely open source, what more can you ask for. I'm really surprised it hasn't gotten more press than it has, I use it exclusively, and am very happy with it.

  8. too cool for words on U.S. Playstation 2 Linux Hits the Streets. · · Score: 1

Ok, this is cool, this is too cool. I was just thinking the other day that I wished some ingenous hacker would make a ps2 port. I never expected sony to condone such an action. Biggest question, are they gonna develop an XFree86 DRI 3d module for it? If not, no biggy, if so, ohhh my god, my playstation all of a sudden does better than my desktop. That's kinda disconcerting really.

OK moron, First, Redhat is free software, you can download it off the internet for NOTHING, so redhat stands nothing to gain from this but possibly for some publicity and exposure, which is exactly what the MS monopoly prevents. Secondly, What the hell is anyone going to learn about technology from word or excel. I could be a really good secretary knowing that stuff. You want kids to truly understand how the internet works, teach them unix fundamentals. I can't possably think of a better OS for schools, all the software is FREE. With StarOffice you have the same as MS Office, and your not going to find much math and science, (not to mention development tools) on MS for under 500$ per program, the open source world, well it's all free baby.

  10. What a piece of shit on Microsoft Runs Out Of Windows XP Family Licenses · · Score: 1

What a piece of shit. I wouldn't have windows XP on any computer that I own. Just glad I decided to take the plunge and run linux exclusively more than a year ago. These licensing issues don't effect me. Microsoft couldn't have made a better move to position linux in direct competition with them. GO MICROSOFT :)

  11. good ridance on Can Open Source Companies Stay That Way? · · Score: 1

Good ridance, now that all the goofy, ooo I'm gonna make a million dollars off a pet rock idiots are out of the picture, we can get back to what we're good at. Coding for love of the art and nothing else. Whoever it was that thought making money on opensource was a good idea should have been shot. It's kinda like building a log cabin, you can sure save yourself alot of money and get more personal satisfaction compared to hiring a contracter to build you a more conventional house, but once you start a company building log cabins, you just took away the whole point of the log cabin in the first place. This analogy isn't perfect, I understand that, but the point is, these are the same idiots who overvalued the stocks, and overvalued the internet. Overvalued is probably the wrong word, unless you attach the words "from a monetary point of view" to the end.
